Poultry farmer arrested after protests

SRINAGAR, Aug 6: Hundreds of villagers of Pahoo in Pulwama district took to streets today afternoon to protest against a poultry farm owner who had disposed off dozens of dead poultry bags on the banks of a water body.
The agitating villagers blocked the Srinagar-Pulwama road for hours till the evening, claiming that a poultry farm owner from Kessergam village has disposed his dead poultry on the banks of Romshi stream at Badibagh area, polluting the portable water of the stream.
The residents claimed that at least four children fell ill after consuming the polluted water.
District Development Commissioner, Pulwama, Manzoor Ahmad Lone said that some poultry farm owner has disposed off his dead poultry on the bank of Romshi stream during Monday night. Lone said he has asked the Municipality officials to clean the bank from the dead poultry. “We will also take action against owner of the farm involved in polluting the water,” the DDC said.
Station House Officer Kakapora, Manzoor Ahmad said they have arrested the poultry farm owner, Adfar Ahmad Dar, for his illegal action.
The SHO the banks could not be cleared off chicken corpses as Municipal authorities were observing holiday following Shabi Qadr.
They protestors were demanding that fresh water be supplied to them by the administration till the stream bank is cleaned off.
