Leh, Mar, 18: Chief Postmaster General Jammu and Kashmir Circle P.D.Tshering in presence of Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL) founder Sonam Wangchuk released a special cover on Ice Stupa here today.
On the occasion Leh Municipal Committee President Dr Ishey Namgyal, Army Officers, HIAL team, Postal department staff and Ganglas villagers were present.
Expressing his delight over postal Department initiatives to promote more Ice Stupas in Ladakh (HIAL) founder Director Sonam Wangchuk said that its a small efforts to reduce water crisis in the region and also to to convey a message to the world how the Mountain people are forced to do such innovative ideas to solve the water crises.
Responding to media query Wangchuk said that this year twelve villages in Ladakh made Ice Stupas and during World Water Day celebration on 22nd March the best Ice Stupas will be awarded. He assured that Ganglas village have enough water storage to help the farmer this season.
Leh Phudho Society General Secretary Nawang Smastan said that for the past many years the villagers were facing acute shortage of water during summer and to tackle the water crises, the villagers requested HIAL team to build an artificial glacier in the form of Ice Stupa and with the help of Army they managed to build a giant Ice Stupa.
Terming it as gift for the villagers Smanstan said that it will benefit nearly one thousand households of Ganglas village and assured to make bigger Stupas next year to solve the water crisis.
HIAL Stupa team members Rigzin Mingur said that they started the project since December last year and expressed his hope that this Stupa will help villager to solve water crisis to soem extend.
