UDHAMPUR, July 24: A portion of Birwan bridge on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Supply Morh, Udhampur caved in due to torrential rain today.
Immediately after receiving information about the damage caused to the bridge just closer to first pier at the entry point on Jammu side due to flood and heavy rain, the police and traffic authorities reached the spot. The GREF engineers team also arrived there after some time.
The authorities then suspended the movement of heavy vehicles over this bridge sensing trouble. The BRO team has launched restoration work.
Last year on June 6, same problem had been developed at the same place in this bridge. It had took over three weeks for the restoration work. But unfortunately again, this portion has been damaged.
This is on the old National Highway, connecting Northern Command headquarters with the district headquarters, Udhampur.
Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur Indu K Chib also paid visit to the site and allowed movement of only light vehicles on the bridge, till restoration work is completed. She directed to complete work in minimum possible time. The barricades have been raised and police team has been deployed at the site to control traffic movement.
