JAMMU: For the residents of Ward No. 30, problems like defective lanes and by- lanes, poor drainage system and unhygienic sanitation in the area are the main issues, which required immediate attention by the Municipal authorities and hence all hopes are now pinned on their newly elected Corporator Sonika Sharma.
The Ward comprised of four Mohallahs, including Patel Nagar, Kailash Nagar, Suraj Vihar, Talab Tillo Lane A- 1 and Lane No 4 to 16.
Choked drains have led to sewerage problems in many areas of this Ward and thus triggered health hazards. “Choked drains should be cleaned first for the free flow of water, which comes out of the houses”, said Surinder Padha, a local.
A college student Zorwar Singh pleaded that sufficient attention should be paid for cleanliness of the entire locality. “Cleanliness is next to godliness and a key to health and happiness,” he stressed and expected that the new setup in Jammu Municipal Corporation would accord top most priority to it.
Poor water supply and low pressure because of damaged supply lines, which were laid decades ago, are also major issues and need immediate attention by the concerned authorities by affecting repair or replacement of the old pipes in the shortest possible time. Voltage fluctuation is one more issue, which the residents of this ward face, said Rani Devi.
A general demand of this Ward and off course an immediate requirement is construction of public toilets at different points. Geeta Devi rued that there were no public toilets in their locality and demanded that the same should be constructed for use of general people.
One Pawan Kumar said that poor people should get benefit of Centre’s scheme and financial help for constructing toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission be provided to the needy.
Further, there is only one park in this Ward and the locals, more particularly the morning walkers feel that one more parks is required for beautification and healthy environment in the area. There was also demand for construction of a community hall in the area.
During interaction with cross-section of the locals, it was observed that residents of the ward have lot of expectations from their new Corporator, who, they believe, shall improve the civic amenities in the area.
“We have elected an honest and dedicated Municipal Corporator, who will sort out the general issues in the shortest possible time”, they said.
In an exclusive interview with Corporator Ward No 30, Sonika Sharma, talked about numerous issues concerning sanitation and drainage, which the resident of this ward are facing.
“Most of the lanes and by- lanes of the area are damaged at various places which require repair. The two nallahs in the area are still uncovered, one of which was constructed 30 years back and needs to be reconstructed,” she added.
Sonika, the first time Congress Corporator, claimed that every requirement of the Ward will be given priority. Talking about sanitation, she said that cleanliness plays pivotal role for a healthy life and if one’s environment is not clean it is inviting a number of diseases.
“There is no proper dumping point in the area due to which heaps of garbage can be seen everywhere,” she said and added that her teams are planning to provide door to door service to collect garbage so that it can be dumped at a common point.
“The existing garbage dumps are posing a big health hazard to the nearby inhabitants and we are also creating awareness among general public so that the residents do not pile heaps of waste outside their houses or business establishments”, she said.
“The defunct street lights in some pockets need immediate repair or replacement. The new electric wires have not yet been installed and old wires are damaged due to voltage load,” Sonika informed adding that helping widows, handicapped and needy old aged people in getting pensions was also among her priorities.
The Corporator said that she was politically neutral and had good relations with all other Corporators irrespective of their political affiliations. “I will try my level best to honour the promises made with the public during poll campaigning,” she said.
