SRINAGAR, Sept 4: Amidst complaints that Traffic Police Department is adopting a soft approach towards the girls who violate traffic rules while driving the two wheelers, the department has decided to act tough against the female violators.
“For traffic police a violator is a violator and there is no he or she. Complaints have come that the girls violate traffic rules while driving their two wheelers. We are not going to shield anybody and action would be taken against the violators irrespective of the gender,” said Shafqat Ali Wattali, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Police, Kashmir, while addressing a press conference here this afternoon.
The DIG said that the department would start counseling-cum-awareness camps in the Srinagar city and some rural areas where the traffic violators would be counseled. He said the department is thinking on modern and innovative lines in order to streamline the traffic system in the Kashmir valley.
“From Wednesday we would be holding the counseling camps. We will start from the city and the camps would be organized in the rural areas in the coming days,” said the DIG.
“It has been observed that minors are encouraged by their parents to drive the two wheelers. This should not happen and parents should ask their children to follow traffic rules while driving,” said the DIG.
“Reports of stunt biking have come from the Foreshore Road and Nowgam area near the Railway Station. We are thinking to trap these violators by wearing civilian clothes while moving in the private vehicles. Once some of the violators are booked under law it will send a strong message and the others would desist from carrying out such acts,” said the DIG, Traffic.
The DIG said that Transport Department has an important role in ensuring that the night bus service operates in the Valley. He said the people constructing shopping malls, hospitals and commercial establishments should follow the norms. He said 5,000-7,000 Tata Sumos operating in the Kashmir valley don’t have the parking facility.
