Srinagar, Aug 2: Police has thrashed a doctor while he was on way to his SHMS Hospital to attend his duty, alleged doctors.
They said Dr Reyaz, a Senior Resident in Medicine, today morning (at around 9.30) while on his way to SKIMS for emergency duty was stopped by a police party at Noor Bagh and was not allowed to go further.
“The doctor showed his identity card to a stationed police officer who instead asked for curfew pass.  The doctor argued, as there was no curfew in the area. On this police officer dragged the doctor out of car, thrashed him and whisked away his car,” said President Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan.
Dr Nisar condemned the thrashing of a senior medico by police.
“This unruly behaviour by police and use of coercion on a senior medico is brutal. This highhandedness of police against the doctor and depriving sick patients of medicare services is barbaric,” he said.
The doctors’ body president said the “contumacious attitude of police has become a norm as in the past also they have not allowed doctors to discharge their professional duties”.
He said doctors in Kashmir are in a state of constant fear because police has unleashed a reign of terror against them. This insecurity has forced many good doctors to leave the Valley as a result of which there is brain drain.
“Kashmir is a police state and police state is a lawless state. Police dares to take law in their own hand because they have been given free hand. We demand stern action against the erring cop or else we will be forced to shut down hospitals”, he siad.
