SRINAGAR, May 6: Police today intensified anti-drug campaign across Kashmir, arresting seven drug peddlers, destroying illegal cultivation, and conducting awareness programmes.
A police spokesperson said, “Police have achieved further success by arresting seven drug peddlers in multiple operations across Anantnag, Sopore, Baramulla and Awantipora, with recoveries of contraband substances,” he said.
In Anantnag, police arrested one person during naka checking and recovered about 1 kilogram and 90 grams of charas from his possession. In Sopore, another accused was apprehended at Wagub Crossing and contraband was seized, the spokesperson said.
In Baramulla, three persons were taken into custody in separate incidents after being found in an intoxicated condition. “During their search, syringes were also recovered,” the spokesperson said.
In Awantipora, two persons were arrested during naka checking and around 40.86 grams of charas-like substance was recovered from them, the spokesperson added. “All the accused have been arrested and cases under relevant sections of law have been registered, while investigations are underway,” he said.
Police also destroyed illegal opium poppy cultivation in Anantnag’s Utrasoo and Achabal areas. “The illicit crop was destroyed on the spot and cases under the NDPS Act have been registered,” the spokesperson said.
Highlighting the use of technology, the spokesperson said, “A GPS-enabled tracking anklet has been installed on an accused out on bail in an NDPS case to monitor his movements and ensure compliance with court directions.”
Meanwhile, police carried out awareness activities in Baramulla, including an anti-drug rally in collaboration with the Chemist Association Pattan and inspection of medical shops. “No banned medicines were found during the checking drive,” the spokesperson said.
In Srinagar, police demolished an illegal house of a suspected drug peddler in Palpora Noorbagh area. A police spokesperson the accused, Hilal Ahmad Sheikh, had allegedly built the structure on encroached state land using drug money. He is involved in multiple NDPS cases, police said, adding that the demolition was carried out after legal formalities. “Strict action will continue against drug networks,” the spokesperson said.
