Srinagar, Dec 29: Police in South Kashmir’s Awantipora area today recovered a centuries-old stone sculpture from the River Jhelum at Larkipora.
According to officials, the artefact was retrieved during a recovery operation, following which police ensured its safe preservation.
The sculpture was immediately secured and kept in safe custody under the supervision of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Police Station Awantipora to prevent any damage or misuse.
Subsequently, officials said, in coordination with the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K, the sculpture was formally handed over for detailed documentation, examination and conservation in accordance with established archaeological standards.
Officials noted that similar recoveries were made earlier this year from village Ringawali in Tangmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, and from the River Jhelum at Sheeri in Baramulla.
These artefacts are believed to depict Lord Vishnu, Lord Surya and Goddess Durga.
All such artefacts were handed over to the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K, for conservation.
Police said the recoveries highlight their sustained efforts to protect and preserve the region’s invaluable archaeological heritage.
