Police officer among 7 hurt in militant attacks

Srinagar, Aug 12: As the security across Kashmir is tightened ahead of Independence day celebrations, militants tonight targeted a Police Station in Srinagar injuring six persons including a police officer.
Militants this evening hurled a grenade at a police party outside Khanyar Police Station injuring an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, two constables, two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and a civilian.
They were immediately removed to nearby Gousia Hospital Khanyar for treatment. Police and CRPF immediately launched search for the militants responsible for the grenade attack. However, no one was arrested.
The attack on Police comes at a time when there is heightened security across Kashmir following stepped up militant attacks and ahead of Independence day celebrations.
Police and CRPF check posts have been established across Srinagar city to prevent frequent militant movement that has been reported on National Highway and Srinagar. Police and CRPF is checking vehicles and also frisking people since yesterday.
In the meantime, militants today fired at a vehicle carrying Army personnel in South Kashmir’s district of Shopian critically injuring a jawan. Security forces launched massive operation against the militants responsible for the attack.
Reports said Army men of 44-Rashtriya Rifles were travelling in a Sumo vehicle bearing registration number JK04-5205 and it was fired upon by militants at Thairana in South Kashmir’s district of Shopian.
One Army jawan identified as Puboo Ram was injured in the militant firing. He was removed to hospital for treatment. More troops and police men were rushed to the area and entire orchard area was cordoned off by the security forces.
Troops conducted massive searches in Waterpora, Pharuna, Mehand and Gunchipora orchards and in Humna, Hirpora and Aripora villages.
Reports said that it was Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Waseem Malla, and his three associates who opened fire on Army. However, reports said that they fled after carrying out the attack.
In the meantime, large number of people attended the funeral of a youth who was killed yesterday allegedly in Border Security Force (BSF) firing at Malangpora area of Awantipora in Pulwama district amid day long clashes that left around a dozen persons including six personnel injured. A complete shutdown was also observed in parts of Pulwama district.
Bilal Ahmad Bhat, 26, was killed yesterday after a group of protesters pelted stones on BSF trooper who retaliated by opening fire. The BSF said that they were fired upon by someone from the mob that led to retaliation. The clashes in the area had erupted after two local Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in an encounter  with security forces
Soon after the last rites of Bhat took place at his ancestral village Padgampora and massive protests broke out. The protesters clashed with police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel for several hours.
The clashes between security forces and protesters also erupted at Litter and Newa villages of the Pulwama district. The forces used teargas shells to disperse the protesters. The protesters hurled petrol bombs at a CRPF camp. Six security forces personnel sustained injuries in the clashes.
The shutdown was observed in other parts of the district. The situation in these areas, however, remained peaceful and no incident of violence was reported.
