SRINAGAR, June 8: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police was among five people who drowned in Kashmir today and rescue operations have been launched to trace them.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pahalgam, Arif Ahmad Shah told Excelsior that ASI and Incharge of seasonal Police Chowki Chandanwari slipped into river Lidder at around 8 a.m. today.
Shah said that massive operation was launched by local police, National Disaster Relief Force, Central Reserve Police Force and Army to trace him in the river but so far he has not been traced.
The SDO Pahalgam is supervising the operation and the Station House Officer Pahalgam, Showkat Bukhari is assisting the operation that will be resumed early in the morning tomorrow.
In the meantime, two boys drowned in a dam while taking a bath in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.
Muzamil Ahmad Mir and Tariq Ahmad Mir drowned in ‘Sarband’ dam in their Wadder Bala village in Handwara area, last evening, a police spokesman said. Their bodies were recovered from the water this morning.
A woman and her daughter were feared drowned in Sopore area of Baramulla district today, police said.
Kajal (15) was helping her mother Zarina (38) in washing clothes on the banks of river Jhelum when the teenager slipped into the water.
Zarina jumped in to save her daughter, police spokesman said, adding that both were washed away.
Locals and police have launched a search operation to trace the duo.
