Police intensify anti-drug drive across Kashmir, 7-peddlers held

SRINAGAR, May 11: The police today intensified anti-drug operations and awareness programmes across Kashmir under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan, and arrested seven drug peddlers in separate operations, wherein properties linked to narcotics trade attached and demolished, and illegal poppy cultivation destroyed.
A police spokesperson said that Awantipora Police organised drug awareness programmes at Government Middle School Mandakpal, Iqbal Memorial Public School Dogripora, Government Girls Middle School Pinglish, Government High School Midoora and Government Primary School Dharamgund, where students were educated about the harmful effects of substance abuse and encouraged to spread awareness in society.
In Ganderbal, police conducted an anti-drug awareness programme at Dar-Ul-Aloom Fatima Tul Zehra (RA), Sandbal, while Budgam Police organised street plays, awareness interactions, poster and slogan competitions and village-level meetings at several locations as part of the 100-day Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan.
The spokesperson said that Handwara Police attached 1.5 kanals of land and plinth belonging to Javid Ahmad Malik of Guloora Langate in connection with FIR No. 14/2021 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act. Police said the property had allegedly been renovated using proceeds from drug trafficking.
In another operation, Handwara Police demolished two shops and two residential rooms allegedly constructed illegally on Kahcharie land by Abdul Rehman Bhat of Shartpora Langate, who is involved in FIR No. 394/2017 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act.
Meanwhile, Pulwama Police intensified searches in villages under Police Station Rajpora and carried out vehicle checking at multiple locations to curb narcotics trafficking. During the drive, police destroyed poppy straw allegedly cultivated alongside vegetables at Zaigam village by Tariq Ahmad Wani of Rahmoo.
The spokesperson said seven alleged drug peddlers were arrested in separate operations in Sopore, Anantnag and Pulwama. In Sopore, police recovered Alprazolam tablets and Codeine Phosphate from five accused during naka checking and patrol operations.
In Anantnag, police arrested a man and recovered around 1.442 kilograms of contraband substance in crushed form. In Pulwama, police recovered nearly 204 grams of charas from a motorcyclist intercepted near Lassipora.
Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations and further investigation has been initiated, the spokesperson added.
