JAMMU, Feb 17: The police foiled the protest march of daily rated, need base and ITI workers of various departments  towards Raj Bhawan after the cops resorted to minor lathi-charge  and arrested at least 40 agitating workers at Panjtirthi here today.
On the third day of their protest programme, the activists of Jammu and Kashmir Workers  Coordination Committee (JKWCC), led by Satish Sharma  provincial president Jammu and  Sajjad Ahmed Parray head Kashmir  unit, after staging protest at Divisional Commissioner’s  office for sometime  moved to the Panjtirthi and then started protest march towards Raj Bhawan.
The police had already deployed additional police and para-military force personnel  at  Radio Station Chowk  near Raj Bhawan. As the protesting temporary employees carrying banners and placards  and shouting slogans projecting their demands were moving towards Raj Bhawan, a strong contingent of police force intercepted them. The workers tried to show some resistance but police resorted to mild lathi-charge and cane-charge on them. About forty workers along with their Divisional presidents from Kashmir and Jammu were packed in police bus and then detained at Pacca Danga Police Station.  The others however, dispersed. They were later, released in the evening.
The agitating workers were demanding framing of regularization  policy for all type of daily rated workers, casual labours, need base/ ITI trained / CP  and seasonal workers who were engaged after 1994 and release of their pending wages.  They said that many workers have turned over aged as they are working for the last more than 20 years and their families are facing starvation. They are not paid for months together. They are facing exploitation at the hands of their senior employees and officers. Prominent  among those detained included- Rakesh Kumar-PHE, Rajan Sharma-Ariculture, Bhanu Partap- from PWD, Sham Lal from Irrigation Deptt, Puneet Gandotra-PMGSY and Sanjay Kumar from JKPCC.
