SRINAGAR:  Security forces today foiled a protest march by daily wagers, contractual and need based workers to Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s official residence, demanding regularisation of their service.
Large number of daily wagers, and other employees of different government departments, arrived at S K Park near here, demanding regularisation of their services.
Raising anti-government slogans, they took out a procession from the park and were heading towards CM’s house when security forces swung into action and stopped them when they came out on main road.
Security forces and state police personnel resorted to lathicharge which  had no impact on demonstrators who were trying to move ahead. Later coloured water was used to disperse the demonstrators.
About 30 demonstrators were later taken into preventive custody and lodged in police station Kothibagh.
The demonstrators alleged that despite repeated assurance their services were not regularized. We have completed more than 7 years in service and are waiting for our regularization, they said and alleged that the coalition government has failed to do justice.
However, the government has now constituted a committee to go through the appointment orders of these employees, including who appointed them, financial implications and other related matters.
There are more than 50000 daily wagers and other employees working in different departments. However, shortly before general Assembly elections, the then government National Conference (NC) and Congress headed by Omar Abdullah announced to regularize all the daily wagers, contractual and need based workers. But because of differences between then Finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather (NC) and Shyam Lal Sharma (Cong) over the number of employees the idea was dropped at the last moment. (AGENCIES)
