Drug peddlers, gamblers held

Awantipora, May 31: Awantipora Police today destroyed about 25 kanals of poppy cultivation in Renzipora area of Police Station Awantipora and Amiribad and Naibugh of Police Station Tral.

A police statement issued said that a huge junk of land (about 20 kanals) which was being used for cultivation in Renzipora area has been destroyed by Police team headed by SDPO Awantipora Shir Aejaz Ahmad and about 5 kanals of land which was being used for poppy cultivation in Naibugh /Amirabad has been destroyed by Police team headed by SDPO Tral Aejaz Malik-JKPS.
Tractors were engaged for destroying the poppy cultivation, police said.
Police said that six persons involved in cultivation of the poppy have been arrested and were identified as Khusheed Ahmad Mir, Kabir Mir, Ali Mohamed Wagay, Bashir Ahmad Bhat , Mohmad Yousf Bhat and Gh Qadir Bhat.
Case F.I.R No.73/2020 stands registered against the arrested persons in Police Station Awantipora under relevant sections of NDPS Act.
So far the police in Awantipora has destroyed 210 kanals of poppy cultivation and has arrested around 26 persons in this regard under NDPS Act.
Meanwhile, in north Kashmir’s Pattan area, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said to have arrested drug peddlers and gamblers.
A police statement in this regard said that Pattan Police laid a naka in the main market of Pattan.
“During the checking one vehicle bearing regd No JKO9 3954 was stopped and was checked by naka party and during checking 8 eight bottles of codine phosphate were recovered from the possession of Mohamad Yaqoob Bhat a resident of Goshibugh and Maqsood Ahmad wani son of Ali Mohamed wani of Agler Pattan, the statement said.
Pattan police also arrested 4 gamblers in Palhalan. Cash of Rs 12270, one blank cheque and flash cards were also recovered from the spot.
An FIR in both the cases has been registered under relevant sections of law.
