JAMMU, May 8: Police today presented a charge-sheet against Kamal Singh Jamwal, son of Late Ajit Singh Jamwal, resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu, in connection with the alleged attempt to assassinate former Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah at Royal Park, Greater Kailash.
According to the charge-sheet, the incident took place on March 11, 2026, when Dr Farooq Abdullah, along with several senior political leaders, dignitaries and guests, had reached Royal Park to attend a marriage function. During the function, the accused allegedly opened fire from a revolver with the intention to kill Dr Abdullah, triggering chaos and fear among those present at the venue.
The case was initially registered at Police Station Gangyal. The investigation was later entrusted to a Special Investigation Team, which carried out searches, recorded witness statements and seized electronic as well as physical evidence connected with the case.
Police seized a revolver, empty cartridges, live cartridges, mobile phones, CCTV/DVR material, clothes of the accused, handwritten documents and other articles during investigation. The seized material was sent to forensic laboratories for ballistic, handwriting, electronic and scientific examination.
As per the charge-sheet, the accused had allegedly developed deep resentment against Dr Farooq Abdullah and blamed him for issues relating to Kashmiri migrants and their properties. Police alleged that the accused had not acted suddenly, but had come to the venue with a pre-meditated mind and a specific intention to target Dr Abdullah.
The charge-sheet records that the accused allegedly carried the loaded revolver to the wedding venue and waited for the right opportunity. Police further stated that when Dr Abdullah was present at the function, the accused came close and fired at him. However, the attempt failed after the accused was immediately overpowered by persons present there.
Police also relied upon CCTV/DVR footage, forensic opinion and witness statements to support the prosecution case. The charge-sheet mentions that the CFSL and ballistic reports were obtained during investigation and were made part of the final report. Statements of witnesses were also recorded under relevant provisions of law.
The police have alleged that the firing was not accidental and that the accused had made preparations before the incident. The charge-sheet further claims that the conduct of accused, seized writings, forensic material and circumstances collected during investigation pointed towards a deliberate attempt to kill the former Chief Minister.
