JAMMU, Apr 9: Police today resorted to cane-charge on protesting transporters, owners and contractors, who blocked the river Tawi bridge in protest against the Police Department for not releasing the payment of the vehicles hired by the department for the recently held Assembly election in the State.
Large number of transporters, owners and contractors assembled at Bikram Chowk and blocked the vehicular movement on the Tawi Bridge. Due to blockage, large number of vehicles got stranded.
Addressing the gathering, speakers said that Police Control Room Jammu had hired various vehicles for the conduct of recently held Assembly elections but till date no payment has been made to the transporters compelling them to come on roads.
“At the time of hiring of vehicles, it was assured by the PCR Jammu that timely payment will be made but six months had passed and no payment has been made barring few blue eyed contractors, who are in hand in glove with the higher authorities”, they added.
“We have already given representation to DGP, ADGP and IGP Jammu for the release of the payments, but nothing has been done”, they stated.
Transporters warned the Police Department that if their payments were not released within three days they will hold a massive protest demonstration against the Police Department and will gherao the Civil Secretariat.
On getting information about blockage of Tawi Bridge, police rushed to the spot and to restore the vehicular movement, cane-charged the protestors, which forced the latter to disperse from the spot with warning to the Police Department that if their dues were not cleared in next three days, they will again, come on roads and will hold protest against the Department.
