Police asks Sarpanchs to help in dispelling rumours

JAMMU, July 22: As rumours about thieves and child lifters gang continued in rural areas, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Domana Sandeep Mehta held a meeting with Panchayat members including Sarpanchs and Panchs falling under the jurisdiction of Kanachak and Domana police stations and advised them to inform people if they observe any movement instead of taking law in their own hands.
Mr Mehta told the Panchayat members and other prominent people of the areas that police had absolutely no report of any child lifters gang or thieves with miracle performing powers operating in the rural areas and they should pay no heed to the rumours.
“Many people are spreading rumours. Though alertness on behalf of people is good, they shouldn’t beat-up any person dubbing him as child lifter or thief. If the people have any doubts, they should informed police,’’ the SDPO said, adding that taking the law in their own hands could lead to problems.
He told the Panchayat members that it has come to notice of police that some innocent people were beaten-up on the suspicion of being child lifters or thieves but they later turned out to be innocent.
He said the people performing nakas during the night should register their names with concerned police station or police post.
