Police arrests 17 influential gamblers

Srinagar, July 2: Police arrested at least 17 gamblers from a high profile hotel on Srinagar Byepass in Lasjan area on National Highway here last evening and an amount of over Rs 6.7 lakh was recovered from them.
Reports said that the group of gamblers comprising mostly businessmen and some of them members of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association were gambling in Silver Star Hotel Room No 315 for past 3 months.
Sources said that the gamblers were being charged Rs 20-30,000 per day by the hotel and owner was facilitating the gambling.
A Police team led by SP West raided the hotel and arrested the 17 gamblers. They had reportedly given wrong names to the police but they were asked to get their identity cards today morning so that the FIR was lodged against them against their original names.
The gamblers arrested by the police include Javed Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Nabi Bhat of Boulevard Srinagar, Altaf Sheikh son of Ghulam Nabi Sheikh of Kursu Rajbagh, Parvez Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Rashid Bhat of Housing Colony Bemina, Nazir Ahmad son of Mohammad Yusuf of Nowhetta, Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Shalteng, Srinagar, Javed Ahmad Khan Son of Abdul Ahad Khan of Tengpora Bypass, Javed Ahmad Bhat son of Gulzar Ahmad Bhat of Butshah Mohalla Lal Bazar, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat son of Mohammad Yusuf Bhat of Malaratta Nowhetta, Irshad Ahmad Bhat son of Ali Mohammad Bhat of Shah Anwar Colony Hyderpora, Ghulam Rasool Mir son of Ghulam Mohammad Mir of Zoonimar Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Rasool Bhat of Gratbal Nowhetta, Bashir Ahmad Dar son of Ali Mohammad Dar of Botta Kadal Lal Bazar, Aijaz Dar son of Mohammad Ramzan Dar of Brakpora Anantnag and Hilal Ahmad Sheikh son of Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh of Karfali Mohalla Habba Kadal.
Most of these gamblers are from business families and are influential. Police are tight lipped over the arrest as there is political pressure for their release. Some of them are politically well connected.
