NEW DELHI, July 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting the flood affected areas of Assam on Tuesday to make a first-hand assessment of the rescue and relief operations and to discuss the current status of situation with the State authorities.
Disclosing this here today, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh recalled that right from the beginning, Prime Minister Modi had been personally monitoring flood situation in different States, including Assam. It was on his direct intervention, he said, that two Central teams were immediately deputed to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur soon after the floods broke out.
Under the Ministry of DoNER also, Dr Jitendra Singh said, on the directions of Prime Minister, a review meeting was held involving officers of Disaster Management from Union Ministry of Home Affairs, senior officers of Ministry of DoNER and Resident Commissioners of the affected States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. It was decided to send immediate extra assistance and also to solicit the services of Department of Space Technology and ISRO for more effective relief and rehabilitation operations, he said.
Dr Jitendra Singh noted that in spite of the preparedness on the part of the concerned authorities, certain areas of Northeast this year experienced unprecedented heavy rainfall which even exceeded more than 100% of what it had been in the first fortnight of July last year. This, he said, hampered the flood rescue operations, but in spite of this, because of the prompt action by the Central as well as the State authorities, the loss of life and property could be contained to a great extent.
A personal visit by Prime Minister to the flood affected areas, Dr Jitendra Singh observed, will not only boost the morale of the authorities, but will also give a great reassurance to the people of Northeast who look up to Narendra Modi as someone who is always deeply concerned about their welfare and development.
Meanwhile, Dr Jitendra Singh was briefed here about the progress in GST implementation in Meghalaya by a delegation of public representatives and civil society activists led by Member of Parliament, Conrad Sangma.
Dr Jitendra Singh appreciated the cooperation and consistently positive response from the people of Meghalaya in adopting the new “One Nation, One Tax” GST reform along with the rest of the country from the midnight between 30th June and 1st July. He said, this signifies not only the inclination of this North-Eastern State to be a part of the economic reform happening in rest of India, but is also reiteration of the people of Meghalaya to be a part of the fast-track development and reform journey led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
