NEW DELHI :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has  called a high-level meeting of Chief Ministers of five  states here on March 26 to discuss his ambitious Ganga  cleaning project.
The meeting is expected to be attended by the Chief  Ministers of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand.
Sources said today that the Prime Minister will discuss  ways to clean Ganga and review the measures taken by these  states in this endeavour.
The Prime Minister will also review the steps that can  be taken to install sewage treatment plants in various  states.
The Water Resources Ministry has asked the five states  to submit detailed reports on the amount of sewage that  flows into Ganga and its tributaries in these states.    The report was submitted to the govt in December 2014.    Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati said in Parliament in a written reply that 144 drains discharged sewage into  the Ganga and the maximum number of such drains is in  West Bengal (54), Uttar Pradesh (51), Bihar (25) and  Uttarakhand (14).
The government has already devised action plans for  ‘short-term’ (3 years), ‘medium-term’ (5 years) and  ‘long-term’ (10 years and more) for cleaning the Ganga. (AGENCIES)
