NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to all those who took part in the Quit India Movement and said through the Movement, Mahatma Gandhi could shake the “foundations of colonial rule” and accelerated India’s journey towards freedom.
“Remembering the great women and men who took part in the Quit India Movement,” he wrote in a series of tweets.
“Mahatma Gandhi’s clarion call galvanised the nation,” Prime Minister said and also shared ‘official reports’ of 1940s indicating the spread of the Quit India movement and the wide-scale participation.
Mr Modi also shared a poetry penned by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1946 and preserved with the National Archives.
“Thanks to the National Archives, I found some fascinating nuggets of history relating to the Quit India Movement. Here is a poem on Quit India by Atal Ji.
This was published in 1946 in ‘Abhyudaya’ a newspaper associated with Shri Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji,” Mr Modi wrote and posted the photocopy of the poem ‘Suno Pralay ki agawani ka swar unwas pawan mein’.
The Quit India Movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 8, 1942 after the Cripps Mission had failed.
Urging for an end to British Rule in India, Mahatma Gandhi made a call to Do or Die and launched a mass protest demanding what he called “An Orderly British Withdrawal” from India.
