Harivansh Narayan is new Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, defeats UPA candidate

NEW DELHI: In a huge win for the NDA, Harivansh Narayan Singh has been elected as the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman by defeating the joint Opposition candidate BK Hariprasad. Elections for the post of the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman were held on Thursday.
125 votes were polled in favour of NDA’s Harivansh Narayan Singh while opposition candidate Hariprasad won 105 votes. While Harivansh is a first-time MP of the JD-U, Hariprasad is a three-time parliamentarian of the Congress.
Later the leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad congratulated the newly elected Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh. Azad hoped that as the Deputy Chairperson, he will pay heed to the objections raised by the Oppositions and won’t be partial towards the NDA government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Harivansh Narayan Singh on being elected as the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.  (agencies)
