JAMMU, Mar 12: Several members of the Upper House today pleaded for declaring Urdu as compulsory subject in schools and providing justice to this language by Government in the State.
The issue was raised in the House by NC member Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardy today. Besides Suhrawardy, several other members including Ghulam Qadir Pardesi, Naresh Gupta and Sayed Rafiq Shah expressed their concern over the neglect of this language and pleaded for giving preference to the State language in official work.
They regretted that during recruitment for Judicial, Revenue and Police services also this language is not given preference. The asked the Government to take appropriate steps to promote this language and declare it compulsory in the schools. Mr Pardesi alleged that ‘all of them’ were responsible for the virtual murder of Urdu in the State.
Replying to main question and the subsequent supplementaries the Minister for State for PHE, Animal & Sheep Husbandry, Agri & Horticulture while responding on behalf of Minister for Culture said that Government has taken various steps for promotion of Urdu language which include teaching the same in Government and private schools as one of the main subjects in elementary/ secondary classes. It is also taught as one of the elective subjects in 11th and 12th Classes in both divisions of the State.
Mr Gurezi further said that steps have also been taken in the Departments like Revenue, Judicial, Home for maintenance of record in Urdu. It is also used as key language in basic police working and records are also maintained in Urdu language throughout the State. He assured that Government will take more steps in this regard and said that suggestions of the members will also be taken care by the Government.
