JAMMU, Jan 23: Ahead of Republic Day celebrations, the Government Railway Police recovered pistol from washing line at Jammu Tawi Railway Station here.
“In view of upcoming Republic Day celebrations, security and checking was enhanced at the Railway Station and during a mock drill exercise conducted this afternoon jointly by Government Railway Police (GRP) Jammu, Railway Protection Force and CRPF, an abandoned bag was found lying near washing line outside the Tata Moori Express halted at the yard towards Udhampur end,” DySP Anita Pawar, SDPO Railway Station, Jammu told the Excelsior.
The train had arrived from Samabalpur, Ranchi to Jammu, the lady officer said.
She added that bomb disposal squad alongwith dog squad was immediately pressed into service, adding, during frisking of the bag, one pistol with empty magazine, daily use items including paste, toothbrush, facewash, etc, three pairs of male clothes, one pair shoes and one ticket from Hathia Orrisa to Sambalpur Ranchi were found.
The weapon has been seized on the spot, officer said, adding that a case under FIR Number 1/19 under section 7/25 Arms Act has been registered at Police Station GRP Jammu and the matter is being investigated.
Pawar however, asserted that the security has been beefed up at the Railway Station and all check points leading to the station are also strengthened while no vehicle is being allowed to enter the Railway premises unchecked.
“We have also appealed to the people to be cooperative and remain alert and in case they find abandoned or suspicious object, immediately inform to the police so that swift action can be initiated to prevent untoward like incident”, she added.
Pertinent to mention here that this year’s Republic Day celebration function will be held at University of Jammu ground, which is few meters away from the Jammu Tawi Railway Station.
