JAMMU, May 16: On the third day of their 72-hour ‘Kaam Choro Hartal’, PHE daily wagers under the banner of All J&K PHE ITI Trained & CP Workers Association today held a protest demonstration here at Press Club and later announced to call off the strike.
Shouting slogans, the protesters said that the demands of poor daily wager ITI-trained /CP workers, need-based/casual labourers in the PHE Department had not been fulfilled. These workers are seeking regularisation of their services and fulfillment of their other demands.
“For the last many years, the Association has been struggling for justice. Despite so many assurances, nothing was done by the State Government. A number of committees and sub-committees were formed by the Government to resolve our long-pending issues, but every time our files were seen gathering dust in the Secretariat,” they alleged.
During the protest, Tanveer Hussain, president of the Association, disclosed that the central committee of the Association on the call of Superintending Engineer (SE), held a meeting with senior officer of the department including SE and had a detailed discussion on all issues.
He said that officers assured the Association timely disposal of all the issues including issue of vouchers. “The officers assured that continuation certificates will be issued for the period of the gap and soon daily wagers will be given received salaries. It was also informed that the Chief Secretary is going to chair a high level meeting on May 16 for early implementation of SRO 520”, he added.
Hussain said that on the assurance of the officers, the Association agreed to call off the strike and give one month to the department for fulfilling their demands.
