PHE daily wagers demanding regularisation, dispersed in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Security forces used coloured water and resorted to lathicharge to disperse hundreds of daily wagers and contractual employees of Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, who hit the streets, demanding regularisation of their services.

Hundreds of workers had assembled at Water Works Division, at Exchange Road near here, raising slogans in favour of their demands.

However, when the demonstrators tried to march towards Moulana Azad road, security forces closed the main road near BSNL crossing.

When the agitated workers refused to disperse, security forces resorted to lathicharge and used coloured water to disperse them at the Exchange Road.

The employees, demanding among other things, alleged that despite serving the department for more than 10 years, they were not being regularised.

They alleged that despite repeated assurance by the successive Government, including PDP-BJP, to regularise their services after every seven years, nothing has been done.

They threatened to intensify their agitation, if their demands are not met immediately. (AGENCIES)
