BHADERWAH, July 26: Irked over the contaminated drinking water supply, the residents of Bhadarwah are up in arms against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department in general and threatened to come on streets.
The residents said they were getting muddy water for the past several years, especially during rainy season and despite repeated complaints in this regard, local MLA and civil administration failed to take any cognizance.
People are apprehending outbreak of different water born diseases as they have no other option but use unfiltered muddy water supplied by PHE Department that too during hot, humid and rainy season.
“Although we are being charged for filtered water but the tap water supplied by PHE Department in Bhaderwah is unfiltered and direct from nullahs that is why we get muddy water during rainy season, resulting in outbreak of water borne diseases”, said Tanveer Ahmed Sheikh of Mohalla Sarafan Bhaderwah.
“On paper there are several filter plants in Bhaderwah, but they have been never used. Instead heads of water supply lines have been placed direct from the free flowing nullahs and the same is being distributed to the public since decades”, said Neeraj Singh Manhas, District President National Panthers Party (NPP).
Meanwhile district administration claimed that they are duty bound to provide basic amenities to the public and have initiated several corrective measures to provide healthy and filtered potable water to the consumers.
“We are fully aware that during rainy season, entire district Doda experiences turbulence in the water sources resulting in muddy water, due to which people have to face many problems as water is one of the basic needs”, said Narinder Singh Bali, Additional District Development Commissioner Doda.
Considering the situation, we have not only started renovation of the faulty filter plants but also initiated work on several new ones, he said, adding that district administration had also passed strict instructions to the department to ensure regular and safe water supply to the public.
