Pulwama, Dec 27: Scores of people today staged a protest against Power Development Department (PDD) and demanded upgradation of local electricity transformer at Kumar Mohalla locality of Arihal in South Kashmir’s Pulwama distirct.
The protesters blocked the Shopian-Pulwama road and halted the vehicular movement for four hours. The protestors said despite repeated requests to concerned officials of PDD nothing has been done in this regard as they have failed to replace the 60 KV transformer forcing locals to remain in darkness.
They lamented that due to the failure of the PDD the students are facing immense hardships. “We are demanding up gradation of the transformer from existing 60 KW to 200 KV as the existing transformer develops a technical snag every now and then forcing us to remain in dark,” Zahoor Ahmad, a local said.
The locals further said that the existing 60KV transformer is not enough to cater the ever increasing load upon it and thus gets out of order every now and then. “The transformer was sanctioned a long time back but now the village has expanded to over 180 households and 200 KV transformer only can solve the problem faced by the people,” they added.
The locals urged Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh to look into the demand and pass directions to the PDD officials with regard to replacement and upgradation of the transformer in their area.
