Omar’s flip flop on Kashmir train

Srinagar, Jan 12: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today termed the passengers security as a priority and said that people should not object to swapping trains at Katra Railway Station if it ensures their safety.
“If there are security concerns, then I don’t think there should be any objections. After all, whosoever travels by train wishes for their safety and security, and so do we,” Omar told reporters at Gulmarg.
The CM said that the security of the travellers is more important and no one should have an issue with it.
“Those who will be traveling would want to ensure they do not face any dangers. We will also want there to be no risks whatsoever,” he said.
Omar added that to mitigate risks, “until the situation improves, if there is a need for a security stop, then it must be done.”

The Chief Minister mentioned that the Railways must make the decision, expressing hope that “whatever they decide results in less hassle for the passengers.”
He emphasized that promoting the ski resort in Gulmarg would lead to increased tourist traffic, which, in turn, would benefit the livelihoods of those associated with it.
“Today, I am here to record a program to promote Gulmarg, increase tourism, and ensure livelihood opportunities for those who depend on it. More tourists means more livelihoods,” he said.
Regarding international-level ski events at Gulmarg, Omar said it is not currently possible due to the standard of the slopes.
“We have to first ensure that the standards are met, and only then can it happen. We also need to improve infrastructure, which will be done,” he added.
Later in the evening, Omar, however, stated that the Government would not support a change of trains, emphasizing that it would undermine the purpose of the line.
Omar posted on X: “…making passengers change trains will defeat the very purpose of the line and render the thousands of crores of investment pointless.”
He stated that checking the train or passengers in Katra or Jammu is fine, but emphasized, “No change of train will be supported by us.”
Omar stressed: “That said, there is no concrete proposal; when there is, we will give our inputs and suggestions.”
