Srinagar, Dec 1: Dozens of residents of Kakapora hamlet of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district today protested against the alleged discrimination in the amount of flood relief provided to them by Government.
The residents took to streets this morning and blocked the main road for vehicular traffic by erecting barricades. They said that the Government has paid only Rs 75, 000 to them even as their houses suffered full damage in the September 2014 floods.
“However some victims were paid two lakhs, three lakhs and three and half lakhs. This is clear discrimination with us. The Government is discriminating even in meager amount,” the protesting residents alleged, adding: “whenever we went to concerned officers in Revenue department they refused to listen to us and instead rebuked us by saying to approach those whom for we voted in polls.”
Amid slogans, the residents blocked the road for several hours, leading to halting of vehicular traffic. Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Neeraj Kumar later went on the protest spot and assured the protesters that he will look into their complaints after which the residents ended their protest.
