DIMAPUR (NAGALAND), June 12: People of Nagaland are weary of insurgency and their resolve for peace remains unshaken despite the violent incidents of last week which reportedly involved a rebel Naga group. This was stated here today by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances,Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh at the conclusion of his day long visit to the State.
Earlier, soon after his arrival here this morning, he got closeted with the Chief Minister of Nagaland, T.R. Zeliang for a one-to-one meeting lasting half-an-hour, following which the two attended a joint meeting of the State Cabinet and senior officers of administration led by Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar.
Later, Dr. Jitendra Singh held separate meetings with different social and political groups and representatives of civil society. Prominent among the groups which separately met him included “Naga Mothers’ Association”, “Naga Hoho”, “Eastern Naga Peoples’ Organization”, “Eastern Naga Women’s Organization”, “Nagaland GB Federation”, “Naga Students Federation” and “Eastern Naga Students Federation”.
In all these meetings and later while speaking to media, Dr. Jitendra Singh sought to dispel the impression that there was any change in the policy of Government of India as far as Nagaland is concerned. He said, the government appreciates the common aspirations of the Naga masses to progress with mainstream India in an atmosphere of peace and therefore, it is the responsibility of all the stake holders to convince different operating groups about the merits and virtues of joining mainstream India and becoming part of a Narendra Modi’s mission of development.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said, Naga people deserve peace by all means and advised to engage all sections of the Naga society in this mission. The cycle of violence is vicious, he said, and therefore, appealed that each one of us must contribute in his own respective capacity to ensure that the incident like the one happened on 4th June does not get repeated, because it not only disrupts the atmosphere but also proves to be a setback for the Naga peace process.
Dr. Jitendra Singh assured the various groups that the pending projects of Nagaland falling under the Ministry of DoNER will be attended soon and the people of the State, who have in the past experienced a prolonged period of insurgency, will not be allowed to fall on a retrograde course.
