JAMMU, June 10:  Rain and thunder-shower in many parts of Jammu region brought respite for the people from the scorching heat as temperature considerably dropped today while heavy rain in entire Kashmir valley, Chenab region and parts of Poonch has been reported.
In plain areas of Jammu, though rain started in the evening but wind-storm caused some damage to the public property and  PDD infrastructure  in few areas. Bhaderwah, Doda, Kishtwar, Banihal, parts of Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch  belt experienced heavy rain for several hours affecting normal life. The temperature has considerably dropped with it while flash flood was witnessed at several places.
A MET  official said that  Pahalgam in Kashmir witnessed 22.8 mm of rain today, while  Srinagar city registered 5.6 mm, Qazigund 4.2 mm and Kupwara 8.9 mm. Bhaderwah town in district Doda recorded 10.5 mm rainfall, Banihal 3.7 mm while Jammu city 0.8 mm  till 5.30 pm today. The light thunder-shower continued till late this evening in Jammu areas.
Jammu recorded the maximum temperature of 40.3 degree Celsius but it sharply dropped in the evening by 8 to 10 degree Celsius. The morning temperature in Jammu was 25.7 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature is also expected to go down by 10 degree Celsius. With thick black clouds in parts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua this afternoon, the vehicles  in many areas were seen using head lights during movement. The people were, however, seen enjoying downpour and moving freely on the roads despite rain.
Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 22.8 degree C and minimum 14.5 degree Celsius. The day temperature also experienced sharp fall. On Tuesday, Srinagar recorded  a maximum temperature of  27.8 degree C while 15.5 degree C was the minimum temperature. Today a sharp decline has been experienced in the day temperature. The tourist were also witnessed enjoying the drizzle in the summer capital.
The spokesman further said that the monsoon has not entered the State but western disturbances have hit the region. He said up to June 16, cloudy weather conditions and thunderstorm would continue in many parts of the State, specially in hilly areas of  both the regions, witnessing further fall in the temperature.
Reports from Poonch said that heavy rain in Poonch started at around 1 pm and it continued up to nearly 3 pm. Thereafter the drizzle continued in the entire area.  Several nallahs experienced flash food due to rain. Similar reports were received from Budhal, Thannamandi, parts of Mahore,  in upper reaches of Udhampur and Ramnagar besides Billwar-Basohli belt. Bhaderwah Sub division and Kishtwar also experienced heavy rain. It was continuing till late this evening.
Reports from Samba, Kathua and many plain areas of Jammu district revealed that wind-storm hit many areas and also caused damage to electricity lines and poles. The cables got broken and fell down at many places, snapping  power supply to some places. The intensity of the storm though was not much high but at many places, it uprooted the tin roofs and broke some tree- branches.
A senior  PDD official said that at some places the electricity supply was snapped due to breakage in power lines. The field staff was on the job to restore power. He said for safety reasons, during such weather conditions and windstorm normally the supply is stopped from the power houses. He, however, said that no major damage has been reported from any area of these three districts.
