NEW DELHI, Apr 28: The number of pending cases before the fair trade regulator Competition Commission has increased in recent years, with about 50 cases awaiting decision at the end of previous fiscal.
However, the number of cases being looked into by the Commission has mostly increased over the last three years.
As many as 53 cases were pending before the Competition Commission of India (CCI) till February 2013 whereas the same stood at just 23 at the end of March 2012, according to official data.
Interestingly, the number of cases disposed of by the regulator has been on the decline since 2009-10.
As per the data, the Commission decided on just 33 cases in the last fiscal (till February 2013), way lower than 70 cases disposed of during 2011-12 period.
In 2010-11, the number of such cases touched 74 whereas in the preceding financial year, the count stood at 79.
Meanwhile, CCI — which keeps a tab on anti-competitive practices in the market place across sectors — received 86 cases till February this year. In recent times, the number of cases taken up by the Commission, including suo-moto ones, has been on the rise.
Together in the last four financial years, the fair trade watchdog received about 338 cases and around 256 were disposed of, data showed. (PTI)
