LEH, Mar 8: Calling upon the Union Government to intervene in the over charging of airfare on flights to and from Leh the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today asked the district unit of Ladakh to suspend dharna for a few days to give the Government time to take action on their demand.
Chief spokesperson of the partay Naeem Akhtar said, the local PDP Unit at Leh on Thursday took out a procession in support of the demand of the people of the region to control airfare to the Leh which remains cut off for nearly six months. They also presented a memorandum to the Chairman Airport Authority of India through Aiport terminal manager, Leh.
Akhtar said that the airfare of Leh have become unbearable and is atrociously high for a commoner who is facing harsh conditions in this area. Due to heavy snow fall the road connectivity of the Ladakh region remains totally cut off for about six months from the rest of the country and the people of the area perticular patients, students and prilgrims depend only on the airtraffic which has become difficult for them due to the high fares .
The spokesperson said that the fare from New Delhi to London is eqvivalent to the fare of Delhi to Leh and it is ironical that the Central and State Government have not taken any initiative in this regard to bring some kind relief for the people of this hilly and remote area. The parties representing the region in the State Assembly and in parliament, Congress and National Conference have failed to project the problems faced by Ladakh region, Akhtar said.
The demonstration was led by district president Tashi Gyalson who along with his supporters later sat on dharna which was suspended today on the advice of the party president Mehbooba Mufti. The PDP was also seeking attention towards the lack of modern amenities at Leh airport.
