LEH, Sept 18: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opposed the upcoming Municipal Committee election in Leh.
Addressing a press conference, PDP Leh President Advocate Tashi Gyalson flanked by Councillor Nasir Ahmed said that the Ladakh has been empowered with special institute Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and it was conceived with an idea to decentralize the power and autonomy in regional affairs and to develop the region which has a large number of isolated community due to its huge territorial area.
They added that holding Municipal Committee election to elect councilor will weaken the LAHDC which already has 26 elected councilors elected at grassroots level. He added that the LAHDC has been outcomes of the long cherish and a struggle by the people of Leh and it was granted as Ladakh Autonomous Hill Council within the constitutional framework of J&K.
They said that the survival of LAHDC looks grim when other local bodies like municipal come into play which may conflict in future with their authorities because both these institutions are purely political in nature.
They appealed to all the political parties to re-think whether they need other parallel institutions and should come forward on a common platform and discuss these issues for betterment of Leh district and to protect the noble institution of LAHDC.
“We believe that the Government will review its decision in the larger interest of Leh people”, they added.
