JAMMU, Aug 25: The strike launched by the casual and need based workers of the Power Development Department (PDD) entered the 4th consecutive day here today.
The strike under the banner of All Jammu Province Casual/ Need Based Workers Union of PDD was lauhched outside the office of Chief Engineer (M&RE) at Bhagwati Nagar Jammu. Akhil Sharma, State president is leading the protest/ dharna along with provincial president Shesh Sharma and Sham Sharma vice president.
These workers are demanding the regularization of workers, who have completed over seven years in service. They pointed out that exactly 3232 casual/ need based workers are serving in different divisions of PDD. A good number of them have completed seven years of service. They all should be regularized without any delay. They are facing exploitation as on meager wages they are working more hard and for long hours than the regular staff.
These helpless workers are unable to feed their families and provide good education to their children. They were also demanding release of their wages, regularization policy to workers, insurance policy for them and compensation to death/ handicapped cases while at work.
The Union president said that the workers have resolved to take out a large rally from Chief Engineer’s office tomorrow at 12 noon towards Press Club of Jammu near Tawi bridge in support of their demands.
