JAMMU, Oct 31: Rich tributes were paid to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 28th death anniversary at various function held across the State today.
Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) organized a function at the party headquarters Shahidi Chowk here today which was attended by senior functionaries of the PCC, district presidents, Ministers, legislators and office bearers of district and block committees besides members of other frontal organizations.
The function was presided over by senior vice president of PCC and former MP Dharma Pal Sharma. The party leaders and workers were addressed by the former Deputy Chief Minister and senior PCC leader Pt Mangat Ram Sharma, MP Madan Lal, Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla, Minister for Health Sham Lal , PCC vice president Th Hari Singh, MLC Ravinder Sharma, MLA Indu Pawar, Ex-MLA Om Chopra, Swarn Lata and Kuldeep Verma (both Board functionaries) besides others.
While paying tributes to Late Indira Gandhi, senior leaders remembered her achievements and said that she was known as an iron lady for her dynamic qualities of leadership, farsightedness and statesmanship. She led the country to great heights of success in various fields and India emerged strong due to her able leadership. They remembered her bold accord with Sheikh Mohd Abdullah in 1975 and supreme sacrifice for the unity and integrity of the nation.
Minister of State for CAPD and Forest Shabir Khan in yet another function held at Govt Women’s Degree College Parade, paid rich tributes the late Indira Gandhi. This function was jointly organized by Gandhi Global Family and Women College Parade. President of Gandhi Global Family Padamshree S P Verma, Principal GDC Dr Hemla Aggarwal, Prof Sadhanshu Sharma, M M Joshi and others were present. A symposium was organized in which students of various colleges participated. Sabhiya Kantroo of GDC Parade bagged first prize while Vinnie Mahajan from Women Gandhi Nagar College got second prize. Third prize went to Sahil Mehta of MAM College.
Pradesh Congress Seva Dal workers also paid tributes to Late Indira Gandhi on her Martyrdom Day today. In a function held under the leadership of Balwinder Singh Sambyal, State chief organizer of Seva Dal, the activists remembered sacrifices and contributions of the late Congress leader. They also paid tributes to Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, known as iron man of India. Seva Dal (Distt Jammu Urban unit) also organized another function at Gandhi Nagar under the leadership of Navin Nischal to pay tributes to Indira Gandhi.
Freedom Fighter and president DCC Jammu, Om Chopra recalled his long association with Congress party as also Nehru-Gandhi family and paid tributes to late Indira Gandhi at a function held here today. He termed Mrs Gandhi as iron lady and said that she is also known for her bold and quick decisions. Several party leaders including Lalita Sharma, Hari Singh Chib Jaswant Singh, Dr Rashid Chodhary, K L Gupta and others were present at the function.
District Congress Committee Udhampur led by working president Anil Pachiala Block Congress Committee Udhampur led Vijay Manhas organized two separate functions to pay tributes to Late Indira Gandhi. Several party functionaries were present on the occasion. MLA Chenani K C Bhagat also paid his tributes to the Late Prime Minister.
BCC Akhnoor organized function in this connection under the leadership of Baldev Raj Sharma. The speakers paid their rich tributes to Late Indira Gandhi and recalled her contributions for the party and the country. Similar functions were organized by Congress at various districts and Blocks of the State.
NPP activists held memorial meetings in the honour of Late Indira Gandhi on 28th anniversary of her martyrdom as she was assassinated under an international conspiracy on October 31, 1984 by her own security guards in her highly protected residence. The NPP leaders and activists paid high tributes to the former Prime Minister in meetings held at Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi, Lucknow and other parts.
J&K Freedom Fighters Association paid floral tributes to the Late Prime Minister in a function held under the leadership of Ved Gandotra. Virender Manyal ARTO Jammu was the chief guest. The speakers while paying tributes on the occasion, recalled Mrs Gandhi’s contributions for the country and termed her as iron lady. They said creation of Bangladesh and bifurcation of Pakistan was the result of her vision and leadership qualities.
