JAMMU, June 8: Former minister and PCC general secretary Yogesh Sawhney today criticised State Administration and Traffic police for harassing public in Jammu city over parking issue.
JKPCC leader today visited some localities of Jammu East to look into the various problems being faced by the people. He undertook a tour of old city areas such as Panjtirthi, Chougan Slathian, Chowk Chabuta and Dhonthli Bazaar. The tour program was organised by Ram Magotra president Ward No. 1. The main issue highlighted during the visit was the problematic parking situation in these areas. The recent Government order regarding illegal parking and the unjust action of the Jammu Traffic police has put people in jeopardy, Sawhney said.
“In the absence of an alternative parking area for people in residential areas, it is unfair to charge people with high fines without any warning.”, PCC leader stated.
During his tenure as the minister, Sawhney stated that he, himself, had initiated a multi-storey parking project for the residents of Thonthli Bazaar, near Radio Station, Panjtirthi and adjoining area in Jammu East back in 2007, but since then, after the terms of two BJP MLAs and now the administration, nothing has been done in that direction. Out of the two BJP MLAs and the Deputy Mayor from Jammu East, one MLA and the Deputy Mayor, have themselves been residents of the aforementioned area and inspite of having first-hand knowledge of this situation, haven’t done anything to resolve the issue.
After listening to the people in these areas, it was realised that the traffic police has been charging fines of Rs 2000 – 5000 from people for parking in ‘so called’ unauthorized areas, without any warning.
Former minister suggested that the local administration needs to identify the residents’ automobile numbers and then officially permit them to park vehicles near their homes, until an alternate parking is provided.
Sawhney was accompanied by senior party leaders Srikant Sharma, M L Malager, Anoop Gupta, Anand Gandotra, RS Baru and Raj Singh.
