Pay tax arrears to avoid penal action: Thatai

JAMMU, Mar 11: The Commissionerate of Income Tax, Jammu today organized an interactive session with the prominent CAs, Advocates and Tax Consultants at Aayakar Bhawan here.
In the meeting, various issues relating to payment of advance tax, recovery of tax arrears and measures to deal with tax defaulters were discussed.
Commissioner of Income Tax, A K Thatai spoke about the various efforts his team is making to bring about a transparent and impartial tax administration. While praising the tax payers of Jammu region at large and acknowledging their contribution towards payment of taxes, he sought further cooperation from the assesses of J&K through their representatives and tax consultants to pay their advance tax of last installment, falling due on March 15 by calculating their income properly.
He expressed his anguish that lot is still desirable from defaulter assessees, who owe arrear tax payments towards department but are not coming forward to pay the same because of which the department is not able to meet its targets towards recovery of demands. He exhorted the Tax Consultants to advise their clients to come forward to pay their arrears to avoid any penal action.
He hoped that as Income Tax Department has moved from being a dreaded authority in past to an assessee friendly department, the tax payers should also respond in a positive manner by discharging their obligation.
Earlier, R K Kakar, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax made a power point presentation depicting the progress made in the tax collection during the last and current financial year and also dwelt upon various issues wherein department need to make further efforts and make up the shortfalls.
Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Rakesh Kumar and Mini Chandran U, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (HQ) also exhorted the assessees’ representatives to provide adequate guidance to the tax payers so that they can discharge their tax payment liabilities on time and in a proper manner.
CA Vikram Garg, President of NIRC, Jammu, CA Rakesh Gupta, CA Joginder Singh, CA Pardeep Gandotra, CA Rajat Mengi, CA Shallay Razdan and CA Vinod Gupta also spoke at the occasion.
CA Garg praised the present tax administration and assured full cooperation from his association to the department in meeting its assigned targets. CA Omesh Gupta, who recently left for heavenly abode, was also remembered on the occasion.
