Patient loses eyesight after surgery

SRINAGAR, Apr 21: As the findings of a probe into February botched up eye surgery case is yet to emerge, another patient has lost his vision after operation in Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial (JLNM) hospital here.
Ghulam Hassan Wani, 70, of Alamgiri Bazar, was diagnosed with cataract in one of his eyes and was operated upon on January 7 this year at the Ophthalmology Department of JLNM hospital in Rainawari area of Srinagar.
In a striking resemblance to the earlier failed surgery reported on February 12 in which a patient, Ghulam Mohammad Beigh, had lost his vision, this operation too was led by same doctor, Dr Haroon Rashid, who conducted the earlier surgery.
Javid Ahmad son of the patient said that though the doctors continued follow up medication for 3 months, his father could not regain his vision. “When we again brought him to the hospital the doctors got angry and told us not to bring the patient to hospital again”, he said.
Losing hope at JLNM hospital, Javid took his father to Sohan Singh Hospital at Amritsar in Punjab. “After a series of tests the doctors confirmed that the retina of the patient’s eye has been severely damaged and carried out surgery on his left eye on April 11”, said Javid.
Meanwhile, patient has been brought back to his home with bandages still wrapped on his eyes. “I am not sure if my father will be able to see with his eye again”, Javid said. He said they have already spent a hefty sum of money on the treatment which would have otherwise cost must less.
Javid squarely laid blame on Dr Haroon Rashid for his father’s suffering and alleged that the doctor does not possess MS degree which is the required qualification to oversee such delicate surgery.
Meanwhile, the relatives of these two patients have demanded speedy completion of the probe so that the erring doctors are brought to book.
