Parts of Kashmir shut, protests held

SRINAGAR, June 10 : Srinagar and parts of Kashmir observed shutdown and protests were held today against the blasphemous remarks made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, who were later suspended from the party.
Shops and business establishments in Srinagar including the commercial Lal Chowk remained closed as mark of protest against the blasphemous remarks on Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
People including both men and women held protests after Friday congregational prayers today to demand punishment against the BJP leaders for blasphemous remarks.
The protests were held at Lal Chowk, Tailbal, Fateh Kadal, Tengpora Byepass, Batamaloo, Mehjoor Nagar Natipora and Chanapora where people raised slogans in favour of Islam and against the persons involved in blasphemous remarks.
Scores of people carried out protest march in Batamaloo area of Srinagar and raised slogans against the BJP leaders for their derogatory remarks against the Prophet. “We can’t tolerate derogatory remarks against our Prophet. These are unacceptable,” said a protestor Reyaz Ahmad.
A protest rally was carried out from Imam-Bada Budgam to Main Chowk by hundreds of people who were raising pro-Islamic slogans.
The religious clerics while delivering sermons today also condemned the blasphemous remarks.
The mobile internet also remained suspended in Srinagar today as a precautionary measure to prevent any protests.
The historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Srinagar, remained closed for the mandatory congregational prayers today. Police and security forces were deployed in strength and no one was allowed to go inside the Masjid for the prayers.
All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) strongly condemned the repeated closure of Jama Masjid Srinagar for Friday prayers.
