Parliamentary committee on defence visits Nathula border

KOLKATA, Oct 29:
Parliamentary committee on Defence is on a study tour to Sikkim beginning with Nathula pass along the Indo-China border.
Led by former Uttarakhand chief minister B C Khanduri, the committee inspected the road and other infrastructure to Nathula along the border yesterday, Sikkim Rajya Sabha MP and committee member Hishey Lachungpa said.
The committee comprising nine members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and senior officials of the committee, Defence Ministry and officials of Border Roads Development Project were also briefed by the army on security measures and infrastructure.
Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda is also part of the committee who visited Nathula.
Lachungpa apprised his committee colleagues on several imperative matters peculiar to the border states of the northeast, including Sikkim.
Stressing on the requirement for re-strengthening of infrastructure on our borders beginning with a proper road management system, he said the infrastructure of our neighbouring countries are comparatively better and well maintained.
Lachungpa also raised the issue of settlement of compensation and acquisition disputes related to land taken over by Army in Sikkim. (PTI)
