JHOTESHWAR, June 7:
President Pranab Mukherjee today underlined the need for expanding health services in the country and making the most of information technology (IT) for the purpose.
The emphasis came at the inauguration of the ultra-modern Shankaracharya Netralaya established by the Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati Charitable Trust for providing medical facilities for tribal population of the region.
Madhya Pradesh governor Ram Naresh Yadav, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, former union minister Suresh Pachouri and the state’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narottam Mishra were present on the occasion.
The President said health services could be delivered to remote areas through telemedicine by connection with super-speciality hospitals.
The President said poor in India and other developing countries could not afford proper medical treatment. Under such circumstances, health insurance schemes need to be strengthened and financially capable people should help in this objective.
Observing that rural areas require better healthcare facilities, the Governor said Governments should step in to fill this void.
Mr Chouhan said the State Government was working in the direction of providing better health services in rural areas.
On the occasion, Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati pointed out that economic inequalities in society are on the rise and people should use their money properly and strive to help each other.
The Swami said the new generation should be educated in culture and tradition and the teachings of Mahabharata, Ramayana and Gita to develop moral values.
The President also performed worship at the Rajrajeshwari Tripur Temple and visited Jhoteshwar Ashram besides meeting the Shankaracharya and other saints.
Mr Mukherjee will now leave for Annupur district via helicopter where he will attend the first convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University at Amarkantak. Later, he would return to Jabalpur enroute to the state capital.
Earlier, he reached Jabalpur from Bhopal via a special aircraft. He then reached Narsinghpur in an Indian Air Force helicopter.
The President arrived in the Madhya Pradesh capital on a three-day visit to the state yesterday and took part in various programmes.
On the last day of his tour, Mr Mukherjee would attend the first convocation of Indian Institute of Technology in Indore tomorrow. Later in Ujjain, he will offer prayers at the world-famous Lord Mahakaleshwar Temple. He would return to Indore from Ujjain and leave for New Delhi the same evening. (UNI)
