JAMMU, Aug 22:   The presentation of iconic Dogri play ‘Bawa Jitto’ by  Palthyar Nehru Youth Club, Garhi, Udhampur, marked the second day of the ongoing State Drama Festival 2017, organized by J&K Academy of Art,  Culture and Languages at Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Written by Prof. Ram Nath Shastri and directed by Sudesh Sultanpuri, the play which eulogizes supreme sacrifice of 16th century Dogra folk hero who laid down his life to protest against the injustice came out as simple, straight forward production which reflected the state of skills and training of amateur’ theatre enthusiasts at the districts’ level.
Presenting a contrast from the acclaimed productions of the same play by Natrang, today’s performance was noticeable for the comparatively chaste Dogri accent of the actors who were successful in bestowing a kind of earthiness akin to Bawa’s ballads sung by folk singers.
Ajay Kumar as Jitto came out a befitting choice for his thin lean appearance, gentle but confident speech. Young Sarvaghya as Gouri impressed everyone with her poise as well as delivery of lines. Other members of the cast who also gave good performances were Arun Kumar as Mehta Veer Singh, Raja as Aadmi 1 and Puttar, Vijay Singh as Sarpanch & Isso, Manohar as Malli, Aadmi 2 & Puttar, Swarndeep Singh as Gaggi, Sipahi & Putter, Shitu Sadhotra as Chachi Jojaan, Firzana as Jiyuni, Sandeep Khajuria as Rulho & Villager, Deepak Kumar as Sipahi, Budda Thokar, Puttar, Anil Kumar as Gushu and Puttar, Vikas Sharma as Putter.
Music was designed by Ravi Kumar, make-up by Uttam Kumar and Sudesh Sultanpuri, lights by Gagan Kumar Gupta, set design and props by Ajay Kumar, Arun Kumar and Swarndeep and costumes by Manohar Kumar, Deepak Kumar, and Vijay Singh.
Tomorrow Ranthang Theatre Group, from Kargil will stage Purgi play Balthothi Zongs.
