Srinagar, Jan 23: The tourism industry in Kashmir valley suffered a major setback as heritage Pahalgam Hotel in South Kashmir tourist resort of Pahalgam on the banks of river Lidder gutted in a blaze this morning.
Built in 1934, the Heritage Hotel Pahalgam has hosted well known business and political personalities of the country and abroad. The hotel that was made of wood was gutted in no time and it didn’t give firemen any time to douse the flames.
Reports said that fire engulfed the hotel at around 9 a.m. and the hotel staff in a daring operation rescued the guests safely.
Police said that a case has been registered to investigate the cause of fire. Police said that no loss of life or injuries was reported, however, old block of the hotel was gutted completely.
The tourist industry has expressed shock at the gutting of the hotel that was one of the main attractions in Pahalgam. The Managing Director Mascot Travels, Yasin Tuman, told Excelsior that this is a big loss to the industry as it was the only Heritage Hotel in Pahalgam.
