JAMMU, Aug 27: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today honoured 16 security personnel including 12 from Army and two each from Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for eliminating three terrorists under ‘Operation Mahadev’, who were involved in April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians, 25 of them tourists and a local, were killed.

‘Operation Mahadev’ was launched jointly by security forces immediately after Pahalgam attack to eliminate the terrorists involved in the killings. However, the success was achieved on July 28 when three killers of Pahalgam civilians were eliminated in Srinagar.
Pahalgam terror attack mastermind, Sulieman alias Asif, and two of his associates, Jibran and Hamza Afghani were killed in Operation Mahadev. The operation was launched after a technical signal detected the use of a satellite phone by the perpetrators.
“Pahalgam attack, which took place when tourist season was at its peak in the Kashmir valley, was a failed attempt to derail the Kashmir Mission,’’ Shah said while honouring the Army, CRPF and JKP personnel for their contribution in Operation Mahadev and taking revenge of Pahalgam killings.
“Alongside the Army and paramilitary forces, the Jammu and Kashmir Police now has been playing a leading role in the fight against terrorism,’’ the Home Minister said.
He said ‘Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev’ have sent an unmistakable message to architects of terrorism that there will be consequences for targeting Indian citizens. While Operation Sindoor “brought satisfaction among the people”, Operation Mahadev transformed that satisfaction into “confidence”.
Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian Armed Forces from May 6-10 targeting terror infrastructure and military bases deep inside Pakistan and PoJK killing large number of terrorists and their mentors and destroying military installations. The Operation Sindoor was launched to avenge Pahalgam terror attack while Operation Mahadev was carried out to eliminate the terrorists involved in the carnage.
“Whether from the ruling party or the Opposition, everyone felt joy and enthusiasm about Operations Sindoor and Mahadev, and expressed gratitude towards the security forces,” Shah said, adding this very trust in national security is the foundation of India’s aspiration to achieve the highest position in the world in every field.
“Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev have sent a clear message to the masterminds of terror about the consequences of playing with the lives of Indian citizens,” the Home Minister said.
The security forces have shown the world that no matter how many tactics or strategies terrorists may adopt, they can no longer hurt India and escape, he added.
The forensic lab of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has confirmed that the terrorists killed on July 28 during Operation Mahadev were indeed the perpetrators of the Pahalgam massacre.
“On behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the entire nation, I congratulate the security forces for strengthening the sense of security in the hearts of Indian citizens,” Shah said.
