AC rooms, no sunlight aggravate diabetes: Dr Jitendra

JAMMU, Mar 18: “Spending too much time indoors in air-conditioned rooms coupled with inadequate exposure to sunlight aggravate the risk of developing diabetes”.This was stated here today by renowned Diabetologist and National Professor of Diabetes, Dr Jitendra Singh while speaking at a Doctors CME update programme. The occasion was the launching of Jammu and Kashmir chapter of “Endocrine Society of India”(ESI).
The scientific session was chaired by Dr R P Kudyar and there were three faculty update lectures. While Dr Jitendra spoke on the topic “Diabetes and Vitamin D”, he was followed by Col (Dr) Narendra Kotwal from AFMC Pune who spoke on “Osteoporosis” and Dr Ashraf Ganai from SKIMS, Soura who spoke on “Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome”.
Dr Jitendra referred to changing lifestyle, spending too much time indoors in air conditioned rooms, less of sun exposure, unhealthy dress code and less of calcium intake in diet as common causes of Vitamin D deficiency which has been recently implicated in contributing and aggravating diabetes. In case of Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin D deficiency increases insulin resistance thus predisposing to high blood sugar levels while in Type 1 Diabetes Vitamin D deficiency acts by altering auto immunity, he said.
Dr Narendra Kotwal dwelt on increasing prevalence of Osteoporosis, bone degeneration, bone problems and bone pains due to Vitamin D deficiency and suggested measures as well as pharmacological remedies to overcome these. Dr Ashraf Ganai spoke on the current common problem of “Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome”among young women. He said there is nothing to be dejected by it because there are modern day treatments available for it.
Specialist doctors, MD scholars and senior faculty from Government Medical College Jammu, ASCOMS and other private institutions attended the programme and participated in an interesting question-answer session at the end of three faculty lectures.
Dr Krishan Lal Gupta, veteran medical practitioner and Retd Director Health, Dr Mohan Lal Cardiologist, Dr Rakesh Kakkar, Dr Virendar Dhar, Dr Vipin Gupta and Dr Pandita were among those who participated in discussion.

Jammu drama fest opens with ATG’s ‘Oma’ Dogri adaptation of ‘Othello’ entertains

JAMMU, Mar 18: Organized by Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Annual Drama Festival 2012, opened with Amateur Theatre Group’s performance of Rajneesh Gupta’s Dogri adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic drama ‘Othello’, at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Directed by Mushtak Kak, the play titled ‘Oma’, though retaining the main plot of Othello, was a clever collage of traditional and the popular which for its entertaining quality won the appreciation of the audience.
Today’s Dogri version although retaining Othello’s original structure-like the love angle between the beautiful girl and an ugly but honest, hard working young man and the villain who through his vile mechanizations succeeds in creating doubt about the fidelity of the young lady in the mind of her lover who ultimately kills her and later also ends his life-laced with colloquial as well as modern expressions came out as an independent production.
The fast pace of the unfolding event supported by competent acting and the well knit background music-a mix of catchy old and contemporary numbers engrossed as well as amused the spectators.
The minimal sets and effective light design also came out as strong points of the production.
The cast of the play included Sunil Sharma as Oma, Aparna Kapoor as Raani, Sandeep Verma as Fanna, Rahul Kumar as Kaku, Indu Kerni as Rajji, Mohit Mehra as Moolraj, Shabnam Dogra as Makhani, Mohit Chib as Desa Papa, Janak Khajuria as Sarpanch, Pooja Langeh as Laali, Vishal Mahajan as Bonsi. Other members of cast were Vimal Mehra, Sourav Verma and Deepak Singh Jamwal.
The background music was designed by Surinder Manhas and lights by Junaid Kak. Sandeep Verma was the assistant director.
Today’s function was inaugurated by Nwang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Tourism and Culture while Nasir Aslam Wani, Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, was the guest of honour. Atal Dullo, Secretary Cultural Academy, Savita Bakshi, Additional Secretary, Sudhir Mahajan, Senior Drama Instructor, were also present on the occasion.
Tomorrow the Hindi play, ‘Tees Din Sitamber Ke’ by Lakshya-The Aim. will be staged at 5.30 pm.

Bhalla flags off Charri yatra for Sukrala Mata

Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla during the flagging off religious Charri yatra at Jammu on Sunday.

JAMMU, Mar 18: Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla today flagged off 13th  annual religious Charri yatra from Lucky Bawa Mandir (Vaishno Mata Mandir Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu) here today.
Over 1000 pilgrims are participating in the yatra.
The yatra, commenced from Lucky Bawa Mandir (Vaishno Mata Mandir Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu) for Sukrala Mata ji temple in Kathua district amidst chanting of Bhajans and religious sermons.
Local administration accorded a warm send off to the pilgrims.  The State Government has made all arrangements of security, health care, transportation and civic amenities for smooth and peaceful conduct of the yatra.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister hoped that this religious pilgrimage will culminate in a smooth and successful note. He appealed the people to optimally utilize religious events to promote peace, brotherhood and communal harmony in the society.
Meanwhile, Mr Bhalla dedicated ` 12.80 lakh recreational park to Trikuta Nagar people.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhalla said, it is the duty of every citizen to cooperate with the Government in making the Jammu and Kashmir as a model State, adding that several projects are in pipeline for the benefit of general masses across the State.
Regarding upgradation and expansion of Jammu Airport, the Minister informed that Central Government has approved Rs. 71 crore for this purpose, adding the project envisages upgradation of facilities at par with international standards.
At Mahajan Sabha, Mr. Bhalla attended 2nd round of Shri Chandi Mata Bhajan organized by Shri Chandi Mata Trust.
About 60 budding artists of Kishtwar, Padder, Batote, Ramnagar, Udhampur, Akhnoor, and Jammu participated in the bhajan competition.
Chairman of the Trust, Bansi Lal Gupta and people in large numbers were present on the occasion.
On the occasion the Minister said that district administration Kishtwar has been directed to upgrade all the basic facilities at Shri Chandi Mata shrine at Padder like approach road, drinking water, electricity besides toilet blocks  so that the devotees do not feel any inconvenience during yatra period.

Army organises Sadbhavana Chaupal

KARGIL, Mar 18: Army today organised a Sadbhavana Chaupal in Suru Valley wherein 65 Sapranches and Panches drawn from 35 villages participated.
Haji Amir Kamran, Executive Councilor was the chief guest. Syeed Kazim Sabeery and Syedaga Abbas, Councilor, Suru Valley and CEO Kargil, Haji Ghulam Mohammad Lone besides Army officers were also present on the occasion.
Brigade Commander, 118 Engineer Regiment, Anil Duvedi welcomed the guests. Various items like UV Polysheet, Solar Lanteens, Kitchen items, Computers, table, chairs, besides other items were distributed amongst people of Suru Valley.

Dead body found

BILLAWAR, Mar 18: A dead body was found from the pond at Challa Ramkote area of Billawar tehsil today.
Police spokesman said that, some local persons spotted a dead body in the pond at Chall Ramkote and informed the police.
“After getting information a police party from Ramkote Police Station rushed to the spot and fished out the dead body from the pond”, spokesman added.
He further stated that the dead body of the person identified as Bittu, son of Tej Ram, a resident of Razwalta, was shifted to hospital and was later handed over to the family members for last rites after autopsy. He added that the said person was missing since March 9.
A case under section 174 Cr PC has been registered at concerned police station.

Air Force Station felicitates Capt Bana Singh

JAMMU, Mar 18: Air Force Station, Jammu today felicitated Capt (Retd) Bana Singh here. He was received by Air Commodore, Nitin Sathe, Air Officer Commanding and Group Captain, Shashikant Pati, Chief Administrative Officer of Air Force Station.
The felicitation ceremony was attended by all the personnel of the station wherein Capt (Retd) Bana Singh shared his experiences.
He motivated the air warriors and inspired them to put their best in service of the nation. He also answered their queries.
Speaking on the occasion, Air Commodore, Nitin Sathe commended the bravery of Capt (Retd) Bana Singh and highlighted the positive impact of his achievements on the morale of air warriors especially those serving on difficult border terrains.
He also presented a memento on behalf of the station to honour Capt (Retd) Bana Singh’s achievement.
Recipient of Param Vir Chakra, highest military honour, Capt Bana Singh was born on January 6, 1949 in village Kadyal.
Bana Singh led the charge to recapture the vantage point called “Quaid Post” named after Mohammad Ali Jinnah on June 26, 1987 after two earlier unsuccessful attempts.
For his act of bravery at the peril of his life, Capt (Retd) Bana Singh was conferred with Param Vir Chakra.

Army Jawan hanges self

SAMBA, Mar 18: A 56 years old Army jawan allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at 59 Battalion headquarters stationed at Sumb area of the district.
Reports said that Army jawan namely K Sadanandan, son of Late NK Keshwan of Kerala, posted at 59 Battalion Headquarter stationed at Sumb area was found hanged near the shed of his accommodated room.
Reason behind such extreme step could not be ascertained while the investigation were in progress.

JKCLF highlights demands

JAMMU, Mar 18: All J&K (10+2) Contractual Lecturers Forum (JKCLF) here today held a meeting under the chairmanship of its provincial president, Anil Kumar and criticized the Government for dilly-dallying in issuing appointment letters to contractual lecturers who had completed seven years of service.
The meeting demanded in one voice to issue regularization list which former Education Minister, Peerzada Mohd Sayeed had directed to GAD on December 8, 2011.
Stressing the Government to give 12 month salary to contractual lecturers on the lines of contractual JE’s, agricultural technocrats and doctors, Surinder Pal Singh said the contractual lecturers are getting merely Rs 7000 per month for their work which is a very small amount in this expensive era, and demanded that they should be paid basic salary of permanent lecturers.
Vikas Gupta, district president Kathua raised the issue of salary hike of contractual lecturers.
Kirpal Singh and Rajni Jamwal said that like permanent lecturers, the contractual lecturers be given DA and arrears.
Surinder Shastri and Suresh Kumar Sudan while addressing the meeting asked the Government to collect the datas of all other contractual lecturers submitted  it to Empowerment Committee on the pattern of 12 contractual lecturers who completed seven years of service, on High Court order CMP No 966/2010, which is one of the solid base of regularization of contractual lecturers..
The meeting decided that the Forum will observe one day ‘Kam Chhar hartal’ on March 12, 2012 to pressurize the Government for settlement of their demands, and requested all the contractual lecturers to gather at Press Club to protest peacefully for getting their demands fulfilled.

First Postmasters conference held in Jammu

JAMMU, Mar 18: Department of Posts today held Postmasters conference at Zorawar Singh Auditorium of Jammu University.
During the conference an interactive session was held with Postmasters of Jammu division with Chief Postmaster General to ascertain the ground level situation. Faculty of  the Business School of Jammu University gave discourse on Customer Relation, Commission and Business Verification.
The function was presided over by John Samuel, Chief Postmaster General, J&K. In his inaugural address he stated that post office was a unique infrastructure and it is going all out to built its customer relations. He advised participants that they should interact with customers with positive frame of mind, so that a customer after visiting a post office is fully satisfied from its services. He also informed that in order to bind with the public, Department has launched “I Love My Post Office” campaign. During the campaign, members of civil society will be invited to visit to neighbourhood post office for a bounding which is far reaching and permanent.
Amit Sharma, Director Postal Services addressed gathering on the theme “Post Office Touching the Life”. He emphasized role of Postmasters and their obligations towards society.
Presidential address of John Samuel  was followed by an interactive session of participants with panel of  faculty members who imparted training to the Postmasters.  Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Director Business School Jammu University, Dr. Anil Gupta and Dr. Komal Nagar imparted the training. Faculty members felt that time was right for department for effecting a change by team work and better customers relation.
Prof. Neelu  Rohmetra exhorted the participants to have a vision of  post office and a clear direction of  its  main objectives to be achieved. She also stated that front desk services were interaction points with the general public and they will have to change first.
Minister for  Medical Education, Technical Education, Youth Services and Sports  R.S Chib presented awards to outstanding postal employees
AK Bhasin, SPM Jammu Cantt, Asha Sharma, SPM Lakhanpur and Chandan Singh, SPM Gangyal were felicitated on the occasion.
Services of Jang Bahadur, Postman Vinaik Bazar, Bahadur Singh, Postman Gandhinagar, Ved Prakash , Postman Jammu Tawi and Harbans Lal, Postman Gandhinagar were recognized for their outstanding services. They were presented mementos.
Employees who had procured business in PLI and RPLI were also awarded. For PLI Daleep Kumar Gumbal. PA Circle Office, Jammu got the first position while Chand Kumar, SDI Akhnoor  stood second and VK Mehara, APM Jammu Tawi stood third.

AIBCU holds meet

JAMMU, March 18:  An executive meeting of All India Backward Classes Union (AIBCU), held today under the chairmanship of its president, Abdul Majid Malik, took stock of the outcome of the Coordination Committee.
The members arrived at the conclusion that the committee has avoided the agenda of enhancement of reservation to the State OBCs who have been given only 2% reservation instead of 27% as per Apex Court’s judgement of 1992 on Mandal Report.
The meeting asked Saif-ud-Din, chairman of the Committee, to take up this demand in the next co-ordination committee meet.
Meanwhile a deputation of the union met the Joint Commissioner, Jammu Municipality who is also the incharge of State Economical Caste Based Census for cooperating and directing their enumerates for feeding the exact caste of the family head, but he showed his helplessness which is a matter of great regression. The union appealed the State OBCs to give correct information of their castes like Yogi, Lobana, Jheewar, Tarkhan, Lohar and Chopan instead of their sub-castes like Verma, Mehra, Choudhary, etc.
