Govt not serious to redress needs of displaced community: AIKPC

JAMMU, May 1: All India Kashmiri Pandit Conference (AIKPC) said that the Government is not serious to redress the short-term needs and requirements of the displaced community.
In a statement issued here by Hriday Nath Jatoo, president, AIKPC, said that even after two weeks not a single commitment made by the Chief Minister to the Apex Committee has been fulfilled.
He said that CM in the meeting has declared that he will expedite the appointment of Kashmiri Pandit job aspirants, who are on the waiting list, increase the cash assistance to the displaced Kashmiri Hindus and introduce the ordinance of the temple shrine bill.
He appealed all the leading KP organizations including Panun Kashmir to put their heads together and make a joint strategy on short term demands for mitigating the miseries of displaced Kashmiri Pandits.
AIKPC made a fervent appeal to the entire Kashmiri Pandit community to chart out future course of action for settling in Kashmir with honour and dignity at a place where there are provided constitutional guarantees and safeguards.

JAMMU, May 1: Mr S C Singh, Executive Director, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCL), Northern Region-II, dedicated a kitchen and a dining hall under its CSR scheme to the children of Rotary Inner Wheel (Home for mentally retarded chidren) at Channi Rama Jammu.
Power Grid was approached by the office bearers of the school for extending helping hand in constructing a dining hall and a kitchen in addition to face-lifting of the entire building. Power Grid immediately agreed to the proposal and constructed a kitchen and a dining hall for the needy children. Power grid also undertook the work of face-lifting of the entire building under its package at a total financial implication of Rs 15 lakh.
Power Grid had earlier also dedicated a hall and stair case at a cost of Rs 10 lakh to the said school under its CSR scheme. Further Power grid has provided Rs 7 lakh to the school as financial aid to the school from 2010-11 till date in addition to requirements like inverter, beds, almirahs, mattresses, quilts, bed-sheets and pillows amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh. Rs 5 lakh would be provided to the school as financial assistance in the current financial year, a handout issued by Power Grid revealed.
Mr S C Singh assured the management committee of the continued support from Power Grid in their yeoman service to the needy and deprived children.
Mr Singh was accompanied by S D Joshi, AGM (C&M), Stanley Mathews, Chief Manager (HR) and other senior officers of the Power Grid. Among others Mrs Ravi Dubey, president, Rajinder Kapoor, secretary and M N Prabhakar from Rotary Innwer Wheel were present. They hailed the efforts of Power Grid in helping them in noble causes.

14 women awarded Nirmala Desh Pandey Award

Joint Director Information, Jammu, Soujanya Sharma was the chief guest while Wing Commander, M.M. Joshi was the guest of honour. President Gandhi Global Family Jammu and Kashmir, Padam Shree. S.P. Verma, Vice President, Shakuntla Joshi, President Gandhi Global Family, Mumbai, Ashraf Khan, Mohd. Hameed Bichoo, students, parents and large number of activists of Gandhi Global Family attended the function. Speaking on the occasion, S.P. Kargil students hold protest against LAHDC

JAMMU, May 1: All Kargil Students Association Jammu (AKSAJ) held a protest demonstration against Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) for its failure to provide hostel facility to the students studying in Jammu.
Students from Kargil assembled under the banner of All Kargil Students Association Jammu (AKSAJ) outside Kargil House, Bahu Plaza and raised slogans against LAHDC, for not providing hostel facility to them.
Addressing the gathering, Shakeel Ahmed, president, AKSAJ, said that their association held several meetings with Qamar Ali Akhoon, Minister for CAPD and Transport, regarding this issue and each time he promised the students to provide hostel facility at the earliest.
While speaking, Mohd Abuzar, lambasted the Minister for his inability in redressing the issue and added that administration in general and CEC in particular are not able to fulfill the said demands of the students.
The association has served seven days ultimatum to the administration and Transport Minister to fulfill their demands, otherwise face dire consequences.

12 injured in road accidents

SRINAGAR, May 1: Twelve persons were injured in different road accidents across the Kashmir Valley.
Reports said that a Tipper bearing registration number JK01E/0279 and a Tata 407 passenger vehicle bearing registration number JK03/7998 collided near Kathpora, Yaripora-Kulgam, resulting in injuries to 11 passengers who were traveling in the Tata 407. All the injured were hospitalized. A Scorpio bearing registration number JK05/1991 hit and injured a lady Taja Begum wife of Mohammad Sultan Lone resident of Gantamulla, near Gantamulla-Sheeri, Baramulla. The injured was shifted to hospital for treatment.

CJM denies bail to accused in acid throwing case

JAMMU, May 1: CJM Jammu, Jatinder Singh Jamwal has rejected the bail application of one Pawan Kumar, son of Krishan Chand of Preet Nagar, who was involved in throwing of acid on a woman.
After hearing Chief Prosecuting Officer Harminder Singh for the State, CJM observed, “the CPO has seriously resisted the bail application on the ground that investigation is still in progress and in case the accused is admitted to bail, he is likely to hamper the investigation”.
“The allegation against the accused in the present case is that he has thrown acid on woman with the intention of killing her. The woman is still under treatment with considerable burn injuries and doctors attending her have expressed their inability to submit a definite opinion about her condition”, the Court said, adding “the accused does not deserve the concession of bail at this stage”.
With these observations, the Court dismissed the bail application of accused.

Pathania for setting up Degree College at Majalta

JAMMU, May 1: A prominent lawyer and senior Youth Congress leader, RS Pathnia, today called upon the Government to immediately take steps for setting up of a Degree College at Majalta.
He said this while addressing a meeting of the party workers at Panchayat Ghar, Majalta.
Welcoming Government’s assurance that a Degree College would come up very shortly at Majalta, Pathania pleaded that right on 100 km stretch from Udhampur to Deoli (Billawar), there is no Degree College for the pass outs of Higher Secondary Schools. He added that the proposed degree college at Majalta would benefit not only pass-outs of as many as dozen Higher secondary schools of Majalta but also the border areas of four adjoining tehsils- Jammu, Samba, Billawar and Ramnagar.
Pathania further apprised the people that Union Minister for Human Resources and Development, Chief Minister and State Higher Education Minister had assured that Degree College would come up very shortly at Majalta.
It is pertinent to mention here that All Parties Tehsil Action Committee, Majalta, has already unleashed a massive signature campaign in order to further create pressure on Government for the genuine demand of the fifty thousand people living here.
Prominent among those who addressed the people included Kuldeep Singh, Romesh Gupta, Kulbir Singh, Mohan Lal Sharma and many others.

RSS releases ‘Shikshaamritam’

JAMMU, May 1: Rashtriya Sanskrit Sanstan (RSS), Ranbir Campus, today released departmental magazine of the department of Education namely “Shikshaamritam”.
On the occasion, Prof Yash Pal Khajuria, Principal, was the chief guest, who released the magazine. The magazine anthologises the research papers, articles and other pieces of literary and academic writings by teachers and students of the department.
While speaking, Prof Khajuria, said that the magazine would not only become a medium of expression for the students and teachers, but also emerge as a leading academic journal for research activities.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof M Chander Sekhar, Head of the Department of Education, expressed hope that the next issue of the magazine would be carrying the ISSN number.
The editorial board of the magazine comprises of Prof M Chandra Sekhar, Dr Nagendra Jha, Dr Srigovinda Pandey, Manish Kumar Chandak, Dr Sagarika Nanda and Paramesh Kumar Sharma.

SRINAGAR, May 1: Five day UGC sponsored Workshop on “Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education”, organised by Women’s Study Centre and Department of Home Sciences, Kashmir University, commenced at Gandhi Bhawan Hall, Kashmir University.
The workshop was declared open by Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice chancellor of Kashmir University, who presided over the inaugural function.
In his address, Prof Ahmed said that despite best efforts, statistics reveal that gender bias still exists in our society which gets vividly manifested by the imbalanced ratio between men and women.
He called upon the need of having gender based studies and surveys in local, regional and national institutions.
In her keynote address, Prof Pam Rajput, member, Government of India, High Level Committee on the Status of Women and Executive Director, Women’s Resource and Advocacy Centre, acknowledged the role Kashmir University and the Government of J&K in being sensitive to women’s issues.
Prof Poonam Dhawan, an expert on women’s issues stressed upon the need for the creation of a more conducive ambience for women to help hone their skills and talents.
Prof Nilofer Khan, Coordinator of the programme and Director Women’s Studies Centre, said that the main objective of the workshop was to achieve the increase in the number of women in decision-making positions in higher education and develop a gender friendly environment.
“The workshop has participation of women from universities, colleges and other institutions holding higher and middle level positions to undergo the training extending to five days”, she informed.
At the end of the first day, Registrar Kashmir University Prof Syed Fayyaz presented vote of thanks.

ntroduce statistics in all colleges: JSSF

JAMMU, May 1: Jammu Statistical Student’s Forum (JSSF) has appealed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take steps for introducing Statistics subject at school and college level.
Addressing a press conference, president JSSF, Dr Sandeep Singh Charak, brought into the notice of the people of Jammu in general and CM in particular that at present Statistics is taught in only three colleges and few Government schools in Jammu Division. He appealed the CM to take required steps for introducing this job oriented subject at school and college level.
Sandeep said that Government had started PG course at college level in 2006 and PG Statistics was proposed to be opened at Government MAM College and all the necessary formalities were completed but the Department failed to start the said course till date.
He also said that the contractual appointments for teaching posts should be made as per UGC guidelines and there should be preference for higher qualification and while making recruitment for these posts UGC recruitment rules should be strictly followed failing which JSSF would launch full fledged agitation.
