Scintillating Sitar recital by Zunain in SaMaPa Aalap

JAMMU, Feb 14: The day-5 of the ongoing 9th Annual SaMaPa Aalap Festival (SAF) 2014 featured a scintillating Sitar recital by Zunain Halim Khan from Mumbai.
SAF 2014 is presented by SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Department of Tourism, Jammu.
The concert was dedicated to Ustad Ghulam Mohd Saznawaaz, a legendary Sufiana musician of Kashmir who died yesterday.
Music maestro Abhay Sopori said that it’s a huge loss to the Sufiana Mausiqi and also the State of J&K.
The concert held at Ved Mandir, Amphalla witnessed participation of young children of Bal Niketan, Balika Niketan and Maharaja Pratap Singh Vidyalaya along with their teachers and staff.
The people living in the Home for the Aged and Infirm were also invited for the concert. The programme began with the lighting of traditional lamp by maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori, Senior musicologist and music critic Pt Vijay Shankar Mishra, Sufi Singer Ragini Rainu, performing musicians along with Amar Chand Gupta, President Ved Mandir, Capt Purshotam Sharma, Vice President, K K Mengi, Secretary Ved Mandir and O P Verma, member Ved Mandir.
Mr Gupta presented welcome address, while the vote of thanks was presented by Mr Mengi. Capt Sharma introduced the programme and the artists and coordinated the proceedings of the function.
It is pertinent to mention here that Zunain Halim Khan has emerged as one of the foremost Sitar players of his generation and is the leading exponent of the Jafferkhani Baaj, an innovation of his eminent father and guru Padmabhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan. He presented Raga Basant Mukhari, commencing his recital with brief Aalap–Jod followed by Gat in Vilambit Teentaal and Drut Teentaal.

Admn repatriates 115 migrant labourers to Chatisgarh

KATHUA, Feb 14: The district administration Kathua today repatriated 115 labourers from Chatisgarh working at a brick kiln in Khanpur area of the district after a NGO from Chatisgarh approached it that the working conditions were not good for these labourers.
The district administration Kathua few days back deputed a team led by ACR to the brick kiln and brought the labourers to DC Office Kathua. After taking their statements the officers send them in a bus to Amritsar, Punjab where from they will leave for Chatisgrah tomorrow.
These labourers were working at the kiln for years together and wanted to go to their home State. These labourers told reporters that they were not allowed to go to their home State and it forced them to seek the services of an NGO working for welfare of labourers in the country.
When contacted Assistant Labour Commissioner Kathua, Ganshyam said that the labourers had no problems but the NGO approached the administration saying that there working conditions were not good and they be deported to their home State. He said on the basis that the administration intervened and labourers were deported to their home State today.

9 bovine animals rescued, 4 smugglers held

JAMMU, Feb 14: Foiling bovine smuggling attempts, Police today rescued nine animals and arrested four persons in two different cases.
Udhampur Police rescued four bovine animals and arrested one person who was smuggling these animals to Kashmir valley.
Acting on specific information, a Police party from  Police Station Kud laid a special naka on the National Highway and intercepted load carrier bearing registration number . JK18-6296.  In the vehicle, four bovine animals were being smuggled to Kashmir valley.
Police arrested the smuggler, namely Muzaffar Rashid of  Dooru Anantnag and rescued the animals.
A case under Section 188/RPC, 3 PCA was registered in this connection at Police Station Kud.
In other case,  a Police party led by SI Vikas Jasrotia  intercepted a Tata Mobile bearing registration number JK02AS-5685 during a naka at Baalani  Check Post on Katra-Reasi road. During searches, five bovine animals were found loaded in the vehicle. Police  rescued the animals and arrested the smuggler, identified as Latif Shah of Jakhani and Bhuttu of Bardi nallah, Udhampur.
Police also seized the vehicle and registered a case in this connection.

Refined soya oil futures remain up as demand rises

NEW DELHI, Feb 14: Supported by rising demand in the spot market, refined soya oil remained higher for the second day and prices added 0.95 per cent to Rs 694.50 per 10 kg in futures market today.
At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, refined soya oil for delivery in March added Rs 6.55, or 0.95 per cent, to Rs 694.50 per 10 kg with an open interest of 99,410 lots.
Similarly, the oil for delivery in February gained Rs 5.85, or 0.85 per cent, to Rs 697 per 10 kg in 7,940 lots.
Market analysts said pick-up in demand in the spot market driven by ongoing wedding season mainly helped refined soya oil prices to rise for the second day at futures trade. (AGENCIES)

Copper futures rise on global cues, spot demand

NEW DELHI, Feb 14: Buoyed by a firm global trend and high domestic demand, copper prices rose 0.19 per cent to Rs 447.15 per kg in futures trade today.
At the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper for delivery in February traded higher by 85 paise, or 0.19 per cent, to Rs 447.15 per kg in a business turnover of 438 lots.
The metal for delivery in April edged up by 75 paise, or 0.17 per cent, to Rs 451.65 per kg in 17 lots.
Globally, copper for delivery in three months climbed 0.50 per cent to USD 7,146 a tonne at the London Metal Exchange. At Shanghai Futures Exchange, the metal for April delivery rose 0.2 per cent to 50,730 yuan (USD 8,368) a tonne.
Market analysts said besides increased demand from consuming industries, a firming overseas trend as London Metal Exchange stockpiles fell for the 20th straight day to the lowest level since December 2012, ahead of the return of more Chinese traders next week, influenced copper prices at futures trade here.
Meanwhile, copper stockpiles monitored by the LME fell to 300,675 tonnes yesterday, according to data released by the bourse. (AGENCIES)

No change in foodgrain prices

CHENNAI, Feb 14: The prices of all commodities remained unchanged in the wholesale foodgrains market here today.
Following are the wholesale rates of various agri-commodities today (in rupees per quintal, except where stated otherwise): Thoor Dal Rs 7,000 Urad Dal Rs 7,400 Moong Dal Rs 9,600 Gram Dal Rs 3,800 Sugar Rs 2,870 Wheat Rs 2,500 Maida (90 kg) Rs 2,500 and Sooji (90 kg) Rs 2,600. (AGENCIES)

Silver surges in futures trade on global cues

NEW DELHI, Feb 14: Silver prices recovered by Rs 657 to Rs 45,579 per kg in futures trading today as speculators created fresh positions, buoyed by a firm global trend.
At the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver for delivery in March traded higher by Rs 657, or 1.46 per cent, to Rs 45,579 per kg in a business turnover of 1,426 lots.
Likewise, the white metal for delivery in May traded higher by Rs 627, or 1.37 per cent, to Rs 46,427 per kg in 90 lots.
Market analysts said fresh positions built up by speculators, buoyed by a firm global trend as US economic data that trailed estimates increased its demand, mainly pushed up silver prices at futures trade.
Meanwhile, silver jumped 1.70 per cent to USD 20.84 per ounce in Singapore. (AGENCIES)
