Devotion-Pathway to God
Vijay Vohra
The spiritual path of devotion to God (Bhakti Yoga) is one of three primary approaches to self realization, which are outlined in Hindu thought. The other two paths are the way of selfless action (Karma Yoga) and the way of wisdom (JnanaYoga). On each path, the aspirant seeks to reduce ego and merge with divine principal.
The way of action, karma is based upon the aspirant’s selfless service to others. The Karma Yogi serves the Lord in the form of other people and creatures. By concentrating on the needs of others, the karma yogi removes the barriers to liberation. The potential difficulty of this path is the aspirant’s pride in his or her accomplishments in the field of service.
The seeker of wisdom, the Jnani aspires to freedom through the exercise of intuitive wisdom. To merge with formless oneness this seeker relies on experiential cognition of divinity. In this age the path of wisdom is difficult for most seekers. It is for the Jnani to become caught up in his own scholarship.
The major benefit of the devotional/Bhakti path in this age is that it avoids the pitfalls of pride. In this era of spiritual decline, devotion is said to be the safest and easiest path for most people to realize God, Bhakti according to Gita, is the love for God and love reinforced by a true knowledge of the glory of God. It surpasses the love for all worldly things. This love is constant and is centered in God and God alone, and cannot be shaken under any circumstance whether in prosperity or in adversity. The devotee’s loving surrender to God draws God to the devotee. The Bhakta is like a thirsty kitten crying for its mother, the mother responds to the kitten’s entreaty to relieve its need. Similarly, the Lord responds to those who depend on Him and selflessly love Him.
Devotion/Bhakti is a mystery of the heart. No amount of argument could persuade us to feel devotion towards the Lord, for it is the bond between the creator and the created which surpasses rational understanding. Perhaps it is in our nature to feel and express devotion. Bhakti to God implies ardent attention for Him, a yielding of the heart to Him with reverence, faith and piety in every act, particularly in prayer and meditation. Love is the essence of true devotion. The more we love God, the more devoted to Him we are. Devotion is therefore love manifested. It may result from life times of spiritual striving.
Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba says, “The Lord is understood only by the bhakta (devotee) and the devotee is understood only by the Lord. So do not discuss matters relating to God with those who have no devotion. On account of such discussion your devotion will diminish”.
The immense love for God is termed Bhakti or devotion. Love is God incarnate. You are uniting love with love through the process of loving. Devotion is highest form of love. “Service to Hari known as Bhakti”. Devotion means constant contemplation of God. It is loving repetition of His name, worshipping and doing penance for Him. It does not merely doing bhajans or performing puja. True devotion should be free from selfishness of any kind. You can realize God only by immersing yourself in the most cordial love of comradeship with Him. No single relationship to the Lord is suitable for all devotees. All can love God in their own way. One person may assume the attitude of a child towards his mother or father. Another may see God as companion or close friend or brother. Jesus Looked upon God as His father in heaven. Sri Ramakrishna worshipped God as Mother. Any positive type of relationship or attitude enables us to draw closer to God. All forms of devotion are accepted by the Lord when expressed with love.
Devotion consists in developing the love of God in gradual stages. There is no better way in the world than loving God. This faith leads to self surrender which blossoms into intense love and culminates in the fruit of God realization. True devotion is to lead a divine life by dedicating oneself to the lotus feet of the Lord. The God rushes towards the bhakta faster than the bhakta rushes towards Him. He takes hundred steps towards you when you just take single step towards Him. He will be more than a mother or father. He will foster you from within you. You can gain the wonderful bliss of life only when devotional singing (bhajans) chanting of the divine name (Japa) and meditation etc. are done in a disciplined manner and with strong faith and deep love.
Beloved Swami says, “When grief overtakes you, you run to God, when joy is restored you throw Him overboard. Bhakti is not a temporary salve. It is unbroken contemplation of God without any other interposing thought or feeling”.
Again we may feel devotion when life is smooth and happy but maintaining devotion through difficult circumstances is the true test. True devotion remains constant and full in the face of adversity. We should rather welcome troubles as tests to prove our devotion.
Devotion to God must be single minded for it to be effective. The magnifying glass can ignite a fire because it concentrates the sun’s rays at a single point. Concentrated devotion burns away all obstacles to liberation even in this life time. The Lord cares for the purity of the motive behind the act, not for the pomp and show. Bhakti is matter of inner consciousness, not of the outer behavior. We find that the mind is steady when it is engaged in other activities, but when it is focused on God, it begins to waver. It does not like to stop its vagaries, but it will have to stop once God enters your heart. Tame your mind by Namasmarna (Japa). Have the name of your chosen God on your tongue, Divine form in your eyes, and Divine Glory in your heart, then even thunderbolts will pass you quietly by.
Bhagwan Baba says, “Devotion is simply the attachment towards God, affection towards the supreme. One need not fly away from hearth and home to cultivate it. Practice the attitude of offering every act at the feet of God as a flower is offered in puja. Make every breath an offering to Him. Install the Lord in your heart and offer Him the fruits of your actions and the flowers of your inner thoughts and feelings”.
Devotion is the slender thread of love that binds the heart of a devotee with the lotus feet of the Lord. It is love for love’s sake. There is not a bit of expectation of anything here. Staunch devotion is that devotion of the bhakta which never deviates from the Lord.
All the Sai devotees are aware of the divinity of Swami which helps us to make our devotion steady for ever. So on the scared occasion of Guru Purnima, to our Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba, our Swami, and our Satguru, Guide, parent, friend and God we offer all that we are and ever will be. He is the one who inspires, He who motivates and He is our inspiration, Jai Sai Ram!!!
Meet Dancer Deepak
Excelsior Correspondent
When asked why is he so much passionate about dancing. To this he says “Dancing is my passion. It is quite difficult for me to imagine a life without it. I feel quite restless when I do not dance for one reason or the other. It is my identity, and one ceases to exist, if one loses identity. Rather I would say my soul is in my dance.’’
His dancing career started as a hobby. Dancing seeped in his blood when he used to watch Nritya Ka Akhil Bhartiya Karyakaram on DDI. At that time his maternal aunt who used to play sitar asked him “why don’t you dance on sitar beats. Thus started his destiny with dance. Then he kept on practicising it regularly. While going nostalgic about his dancig career he says “My public participation came when I took part in funfare cultural programme organised by Jammu University.
There was no looking behind since then. Later on when I joined Engineering College to pursue architecture, I did not leave dancing. Rather, I practised it side by side my studies. Then I joined Nritya Niketan New Delhi to learn more about classical dance under the guidance of P Natrajna. I remained under his tutelage for almost three years. This apprenticeship opened window for my future career. I got an opportunity to perform in National Integration & Cultural event where I got first prize.’’
Presently he is learning Kathak Dance (Jaipur and Lakhnavi Gharana) from Pt Narayan Prasad. Besides, he is also working as event choreographer with a renowned theatre group.
He has to his credit many prizes. He has been felicitated by various cultural group for his outstanding contribution to the field of dance.
However he is not satisfied with the Dance Institutes in Jammu. He says everyone is getting attracted towards western dance styles but do not opt for classical dance which is quite necessary for learning basic dance skills. The Jammu based Dance institutes promote only western style dance, and give a raw deal to classical dance.
His parents have stood by him through thick and thin. He is quite proud of it. He says”. My parents have been quite supportive of my vocation. They have encouraged me right from beginning to grab every opportunity to prove my work at every stage. Whether at home or outside. they remain quite enthusiastic about my performance”.
The splendor that is Amarnath
Chander M. Bhat
Almost every part of India is known for many a sacred shrine, but the Amarnath Cave embossed in the snowy valley of Kashmir reveals the unique sight of natural Ice Linga of Lord Shiva perched on a glacial gorge which waxes and wanes with the movements of the moon. According to a common belief, it reaches the maximum height on Purnima in the month of Shravan (July-August), when Shiva is supposed to have divulged to Parvati the secret of salvation. On this day thousands of pilgrims negotiating the most difficult ridges arrive at the holy cave for Dharshan of the Lord. The pilgrimage of thousands of devotees to the far way cave of Amarnath, nestled in a glacial gorge of the western Himalayas, through some of the most charming scenery in the world, is fascinating in the extreme. One is stuck with wonder at the quiet and ordinary way in which a canvas town springs up with incredible rapidity of colours and of all shapes and sixes and broad streets running through the middle, and all vanishing as quickly at the break of dawn when the whole army of pilgrimages set out on the march again. The glow of countless cooking fires, the ashen smeared Sadhus under the canopy of discussing or meditating before the Dhunis, the Sannyasins of all orders in various garbs, the men and women with children, from all parts and their devote faces, the torches shimmering at nightfall, the blowing of conch-shells and horns, the singing of hymns and prayers in chorus………. all these are most impressive, and convey an idea of mastering passion of the race for religion.
Amarnath literally means the Immortal Lord. Lord Shiva stands for Deathlessness. He confers this boon on his devotees. Deathlessness is not trying to preserve the physical sheath forever but in growing so fearless as to look at death in its face! The truth of this will be evident to one who undertakes a pilgrimage to Amarnath……….the hallowed pilgrimage center of Kashmir.
In olden days the route was via Rawalpindi (Pakistan) but now a direct train is there connecting rest of India to Jammu, the winter capital of the State. The best part of journey is between Guru Purnima and Shravan Purnima. The Government of Jammu and Kashmir makes all arrangements for the comfort of the pilgrims for undertaking the ritualistic journey for visiting the shrine on Shravan Purnama. But the highly unpredictable weather of the mountains should be more obliging before Guru Purnima as rains would not start. There is a bus service from Jammu to Pahalgam (7,500 ft.). At Pahalgam the pilgrims arrange for coolies or ponies to carry gear of food and clothes etc. Everybody remains busy making arrangements for the Yatra. The golden glow of, the sun falls on the turbulent river at Pahalgam. Pahalgam in Kashmiri means the land of shepherds.
The journey from Pahalgam commences towards the first halting station Chandanwari (8,500 ft.) is ten miles away. With the bright sunlight reflected in silvery snow-clad peaks above, and gurgling river meandering through the valley below, the pilgrim already is in a different, world. The trekking undoubtedly is slow but not, boring as the scenery alongside is most picturesque.
Early the next morning the caravan again proceeds further towards a straight two mile climb towards Pisutop (12,200 ft.). From Pisutop one has to cover seven miles to reach Seshnag (13,148 ft.) next halting station. Ascent is stiff and steep, climbs are difficult to negotiate. The path is clear but at some places the glaciers become slippery. It is here where a stick carried by a pilgrims become useful and in some cases savers ones life. Before entering the small pilgrim camp one gets the enchanting sight of blue still waters of Seshnag Lake. One has to walk a mile to take a refreshing bath. The lake is very deep and is fed by the melting snow of the glaciers above and water is bluish green below. It is believed that some one has seen Adishesha………. the many hooded serpent streaking through these waters. Whatever may be the explanation, it is true that one experiences an invisible presence of some super power near the lake. The mountains are fully covered with snow and its peaks resemble the seven heads of the mythical snake. The quiet place looks so thickly populated, then, that everybody, despite intense cold, appears in high spirits, probable feeling proximity to the diving. The roaring sound of gushing streams, the gigantic snow clad mountains, the moonlight beaming through foggy enclosure, the neighing horses and the dim tent-tops all around presents an indelible impression. One feels nearer to God and in such a blissful environment.
From Sheshnag one reaches Panchtarni, the valley cress-crossed by five rivulets. The journey is most difficult as one has to climb to a height of 14,500 ft. and then to descend. The highest point is Mahagunus, which means the great serpent. There is no vegetation at this height and one begins to feel lack of oxygen. It is said that the fragrance of the herbs in Mahagunus is so alluring that the pilgrims are warned not to have any rest at this place and Ponywallas are very careful not to allow their horses to graze here which otherwise, is fatal for these animals. The four miles descent from Mahagunus to Panchtarni is slippery especially after a rain, which is a common occurrence. The night is spent is great expectation so reaching the cave in the morning. The journey starts early in the morning. Again a steep ascent to Sant Singh Top (13,500 ft.) and a slippery descent until one reaches the low-lying glaciers over which are seen the pilgrims walking in a row. At last one reaches the Amar Ganga where one takes his bath in ice-cold water and climbs up the steep to the cave. This bath and steep climb are final tests of devotion.
The holy cave is approximately 50′ long 25′ wide and 15′ high. When one reaches the cave, he becomes over struck at the sight of Ice Linga completely filling the right corner of the, cave, the top of the Linga touches the root of the cave. The base of the cave is also covered with ice, like a carpet. Here Shiva is worshipped by nature in the purest way. The cave is the nature’s temple and is undefiled, by human touch. Shiva is snow-white and pure. Linga is formed by drops of water falling from the top of the cave and two other small ice Lingas are also formed, believed to be the symbols of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. On early morning a white pair of doves (believed to be Shiva and Parvati) appear at the cave corner. Austerity and strenuous mountain climbing with all its attendant risks are soon forgotten and one gets a sense of grand fulfillment here.
After having darshan one climbs down with a heavy heart casting “a longing lingering look behind” and slowly starts returning. The river Amar Ganga flows with a gentle murmur Shiva, Shiva and the tall peaks echoed it, to be heard by the Heavens. Himalayas around Kashmir have their special grandeur. Even a loud shout is sufficient to dislodge a huge boulder or rock precariously handing on the tip of the mountain and bring it hurtling down leveling everything, pilgrims and all. Rarefied atmosphere again burns the exposed skin of the face with its ultra violet radiation. At every step death stares in the face! But who cares? One can return through the same route or by a different route, which takes a short time but is very risky.
Despite innumerable difficulties and hindrances the pilgrimage to Amarnath provides not only adventure and spiritual solace, but also an ineffable experience that abides with one for ever.
Inner Voice
WHEN I’M GONE
Donot stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there.I donot sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond that glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush;
I am the swift uplifting rush.
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Donot stand at my grave and cry;
I am there. I didnt die.

AN UNTRODDEN VALE
A vale embowered by lofty mountains
Forests dense meadows green
grassy plains
Entrenched in perfect serenity and calm
Refreshing nurturing a balm.
Beautiful houses shining bright
A wonderful sight
Farmers tilling ground
Each field bound
By a barrier small
Green fields enthrall
The onlookers passing by
Gaze at bathed land and sky
Simple souls clad in rags
Carrying filthy bags
Water eyes of passers-by
There comes a raged guy
A down to earth life
Full of pain and strife
Herds treading dusty roads
Women carrying head loads
Petty politics in roadside shops
The rash pulse suddenly drops
School children clad neatly
Sing prayers sweetly
True learning a distant dream
Who will come to skim the cream?

Top 5 Childhood Cancers
Vijay Kumar
We generally think that cancer cannot happen to children. We are wrong here, because the truth is something else. Let’s take a look at it. childhood cancer is the number one killer disease of children — more than asthma, diabetes, AIDS and cystic fibrosis combined. In US, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. 4000 children die from cancer each year. That means 11 children die every single day, every single year. Cancers in children occur regularly, randomly and spare no ethnic group, socioeconomic class or geographical region. The type of cancers that occur in children are different from adults. Lifestyle or environmental risk factors have little role to play in it. Instead, it’s usually the result of DNA changes in cells that take place very early in life. Because of major treatment advances, more than 80 percent of children with cancer now survive five years or more. Still, cancer is considered the second most common cause of death in children younger than 15 years old, after accidents. Cancers in children are sometimes hard to recognize because common illnesses or everyday infections and bruises can mask the early signs. Here are five most common pediatric cancers discussed along with warning signs & symptoms.
Leukemia(Blood Cancer) is a cancer of the bone marrow, the spongy center of the bones that makes blood cells. It accounts for approximately 35% of all childhood cancers; approximately 1 in 1000 children will be diagnosed with leukemia by the age of 19, although it is more common in children under the age of 10. Three out of four childhood leukemia cases are acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Symptoms include, bone and joint pain, fatigue, weakness, bleeding, fever, weight loss. If parents suspect any of these above symptoms, then child should be immediately taken to doctor. The doctor checks for enlarged liver, spleen, or lymph nodes and take blood for a complete blood test. The blood test is most important for the diagnosis. Do not wait: as blood cancer progresses quickly and must be treated promptly. Remember that about 10% of the patients with leukemia will show a normal blood test at the time of diagnosis. To confirm that the child has blood cancer, a bone marrow test must be done.
Brain tumors(cancers) account for 15% of pediatric cancers. The symptoms depend on the site of the tumor. Since young children often do not complain of the symptoms, parents must rely on their own observations of their child to be aware of signs and symptoms. Signs and Symptoms includes seizure, repetitive automatic movements, persistent vomiting, nausea, progressive weakness, neck tilt, squint, walking, balance problems, precocious puberty, growth retardation, sleep apnea, vision problems, headache especially that wakes the child up at night or is early in the morning, back pain, which should be taken seriously in a child, changes in personality, irritability, listlessness, excessive thirst and excessive urination. If the patient is a baby, the only symptom may be fast growing head. Brain tumours are diagnosed by CT scan and MRI scan. Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Neuroblastoma accounts for 5%-7% of all childhood malignancies; about 1 in 6000 children will be diagnosed with neuroblastoma by the age of five. Neuroblastoma manifests as a lump or mass in the abdomen or around the spinal cord. The average age at diagnosis is 2 years. Signs and Symptoms includes mass in the abdomen, chest, neck, or pelvis, loss of appetite, nausea, weight loss, stomach pain, constipation, difficulty urinating, black eyes, a droopy eyelid, vision problems, pain in the chest, difficulty breathing, persistent cough, pain or numbness in the lower extremities, limping, inability to stand, bone pain, fever, irritability, backaches (back pain in children is not common). Most neuroblastomas are found in the abdomen. Parents may feel a mass while dressing or bathing their child. The doctor should check for abnormal mass and do a urine test. A simple 24 hour urine collection is done to detect these abnormal levels. Other tests will include x-rays, abdominal ultrasound, CT scans of the head, chest and abdomen, a complete blood count. Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Wilms tumor is a cancerous tumor of the kidney, although it is totally unrelated to adult kidney cancer. It accounts for 6-7% of childhood cancer cases. It is more common in children under the ages of 7 years. Signs and Symptoms includes abdominal swelling and/or pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, fever of unknown origin, night sweats, abnormal urine color or blood in the urine, malaise. Wilms tumor is best treated when it is found early, before it has spread to other organs of the body. Infact, Wilms tumor is the only cancer of children with best results if diagnosed early and treated properly. Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, and possibly radiation, depending on how far the cancer has spread. The 5 year survival rate for children treated for Wilms tumor is approximately 90%.
Lymphoma starts in certain cells of the immune system called lymphocytes. These cancers affect lymph nodes and other lymph tissues, like the tonsils or thymus. They can also affect the bone marrow and other organs, and can cause different symptoms depending on where the cancer is growing. There are two main types of lymphoma: Hodgkin disease, is rare in children younger than 5 years of age. This type of cancer is very similar in children and adults, including which types of treatment work best. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is more likely to occur in younger children than Hodgkin lymphoma, but it is still rare in children younger than 3 years. These cancers often grow quickly and require intensive treatment, but they also tend to respond better to treatment than most non-Hodgkin lymphomas in adults. Lymphoma Symptoms includes Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin, weight loss, fever, sweats and weakness.
